Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

You think you need X amount of transport and suddenly, you realize you really need Y and Z plus support from ABC.

It takes doing it to figure out where the flaws are...and each city and town is different.

Different people, needs etc. Timing etc. You move too soon and you may kill people who would've lived otherwise (like vent patients, bed-bound etc).

It's easy to play God (not you) but unless you've been in an evac situation, where people were dying, its a bad place I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

Also the rent-a-car people simply evacuated, there was nobody to rent the cars.

The Fish and Wildlife department has apparently deployed all their flat-bottomed boats for resuce purposes.

My guess is that her reporting will never be the same.

This is bad, very bad, but can one imagine the loss of life if this had happened 60 years ago, before satellites and modern forcasting. There wouldn't be any looters--only corpses---at least most of the people are alive. Now may the Lord grant us strength to tackle our problems with fortitude and love.

I'm gonna say nothing more on this topic until relief efforts are well underway. But it cannot be forgotten or rationalized away - there are probably several other areas with grossly inadequate disaster planning that puts tens of thousands of people at risk - hurricanes can hit all the way up to Boston. We cannot let that slide once we have folks safe, or else it will happen all over again.

I saw a CG "micro-mini" tugboat (or a very big zodiac shaped like a tug) being towed up I-95 in Florida, likely on its way to LA. Surprisingly, there were a couple of power company convoys still headed south. My surprise is that a decision wasn't made to handle the south Florida problems with existing trucks and send newcomers to the panhandle and west. Perhaps they thought they could quickly finish fixing south Fla and then join the La/Ala/Miss effort.

This is just so sad, isn't it? The very things we discussed would have helped with most of these problems.

Anyone watching the WDSU TV feed? The female anchor read from a news report that bodies are spotted floating in the water near the Superbowl.

Strange...the last paragraph in that article says nothing about Stennis being fine. It says they don't know how it fared.

Listening on the radio....as the pumping stations come on line and pump out the water it is putting MORE water in other parts of the city and making things worse.

Does anyone in NO know what they are doing?

WDSU says they're going to have helicopters lift 3000-lb sandbags and drop them where the breach is in the levee to fix the leak.

That will only work once the water level is nearly equalized on both sides of the levee, or else the inflowing water will just move them aside. And they will have to helicopter in enough materials to fill a 200-yard gap. And there is no point pumping until that gap is filled, or else the water just comes right back in.
