Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

I for one was planning a trip to New Orleans later this year.
I am more determined than ever to take it. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Dude, never mind. Have you noticed the city is destroyed? Yeah, I have. And I also saw tourists with no way out, many of who will probably die from this. They were extremely vulnerable and the city apparently didn't plan how to get them to safety.

Many kids from Tulane are in Jackson, Mississippi. They have a program between Tulane and Jackson State to assist each other during disasters. Jackson had some rough weather yesterday, but nothing like the coast.

Thanks. Staying out is good advice. If folks have water, food and shelter where they are, they're better off staying put and waiting to go back.

IN reality people were unable to get out period.

What, tourists should not go to any coastal areas during hurricane season?I wouldn't go to a major city that doesn't have a plan in place to get me out - a fair number of tourists got trapped.

I'll take it one step farther and say in my travels around the USA I've seen as many or more bigots in the North as in the deep South. You HEAR more about Southern Bigots because of movies like Mississippi Burning, but they are not just indicative of the KKK... in some ways we all bear responsibility for this misunderstanding. There is also bigotry in the other direction.
We lived in an upscale neighborhood in So. California with quite a few well-to-do blacks who would not join in when invited to neighborhood functions and one neighbor would not let his children play with the white children in the neighborhood...
Personally -- as long as I'm on an off-topic roll -- while I think what Oprah does in Africa is great... what about the people in this country who could benefit from her largess? Certainly, she pulled herself up, got an education and made something great out of herself.. I'd like to see her fan out more into these truly-poor neighborhoods and encourage the young to follow in her footsteps.

Why yesterday did they give the impression that New Orleans was spared. Now people trying to get back in have to be rescued from cars. They do this so the those bankers in New York didn't face a Black Monday?

Please respect my wishes, peddle your constitutional speak elsewhere today....
If your belief is that helping Americans stave off death and disease is not warranted than you have every right to believe such....but please, enough, the situation many of our citizenry face today is far more grave and urgent....and if the government is to help, so be it....

Is (Republican) Senator David Vitter at this news conference? I fear much will be made of his absence if he isn't.

Wow. I'm sorry for my ignorance, but is that the main route out of the city? I don't know for sure, I haven't lived there for 30 years. I think it's one of the ways out... well, not anymore. :-(
