Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Go back and check out what I posted in #1,183.

Planning a large-scale evacuation of an entire metropolitan area is like planning to stage a Shakespeare play in the middle of a tornado. At night.

Gaping holes in disaster plans? You better believe it. When faced with a situation like this, your best approach is to keep your wits about you, think clearly, and hope that your instincts are sound.

I wonder if diseases like malaria could come out of this disaster.

Probably, but I think things like cholera come sooner.

The industrial canal connects the river with the lake. From what others have posted, the river is higher than the lake.

Oh yes, besides food and water, of course medicinal supplies.

Then you understand what I am saying.

Look, by your collective posts, you think looting's fine.

What gives you that idea? I said emergency needed supplies could be obtained without moral problem. I said nothing at all about looting for fun and profit.

They're not taking food and water, they are hauling out the innards of entire stores.....it's not all food and water, blankets and medicine...it's looting.

Duh. Some people can't follow a detailed argument, I guess. Yes, people are commiting heinous criminal acts in looting goods that are not a matter of survival.

I think everyone condemns that.

But rational people will see that there are legitimate arguments to be made for "stealing" items for genuine legitimate survival.

Can you see how a person can support the one without supporting the other?

If you mean the bridge on CNN the past few minutes, that was the twin spans of the I-10. I know because Wolf told me so.

I am greatly worried the fires will go out of control in the city and I do wonder if this city will come back.

If San Francisco can come back from 1906, New Orleans can come back from 2005.

From MSNBC:

Industry sources said that one big underwriter had already stopped providing business-interruption insurance in the Gulf and others warned that rising storm losses would lead to premiums so high that insuring platforms could become uneconomic.

The rescue footage on WWL is incredible. The people that chopped through their roof and are sitting on there with a huge American flag. Incredible. The National Guard are doing a fantastic job.

Listen to Frank Zarelle on CNN; the reporters are beginning to understand just how bad this is going to be; you can hear it in his voice.

"You cannot provide for the victims within these city limits."

As an aside, why is Wolf YELLING????

In addition, oil rigs and oil pipelines are severely damaged. Said that the pipelines are leaking.

The news said there was minimal damage at noon today. Now I see oil is up 2.61 a barrel and gas shot up another 41 cents today!
