Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Regarding the location in the picture, where is that water coming from, the river or the lake?

I don't know.

Fox is showing a Sea Lion on the street in Gulfport. People are trying to hydrate the animal but it is baking in the sun. They are reporting that an animal show that had 4 Sea Lions was destroyed and the animals have scattered.

Very odd to see a sea lion in the middle of the street.

No, I do not. I understand that the evac order was mandatory on Sunday. Please read some of my other posts if you want to check me on that. The evacuation began on Saturday, it was not mandatory until Sunday.

People are saying they should have evacuated 24 hours earlier. The voluntary evacuation order was in place from the gov and mayor on Sat before noon. Some parishes individually made it mandatory as early as Sat morning. To advance this order 24 hours moves it Friday.

I have also said that the argument as to whether the first order should have been mandatory is open to reasonable discussion. However, also realize that a voluntary order generally precedes a mandatory order so that special needs folks and those who want to get out no matter what have the opportunity to do so before the roads become clogged as they invariably do in mandatory evacuation situations.

The only thing I could possibly understand stealing is food and water, most especially for the children, elderly, or ill, as there's no means of getting these things to them before the frail die.

Medicine, blankets, batteries and maybe a portable radio. Candles or a battery-operated light.

hard to believe all the NO cells of the state trunked system have failed...

I've had a serious lack of faith in trunked systems for some time. They always seem to breakdown when you need them most - think 9/11 in New York.

No more threat of flooding... somewhat bright outside now.. by no means sunny, but not dreary. I didn't loose power, either, but somewhere, 77,000 other people in this city did.

Well...9" isn't a lot of water, but the French Quarter is one of the higher sections of New Orleans (being the oldest part of town), and had not flooded *at all* before now. If the water goes no higher, then this is no big deal. But it goes to show just how badly the rest of the city is flooding, when one of the least vulnerable parts of town is starting to get water in the streets.

Besides, if the French Quarte gets water in it, where will Shep get his Hurricanes?

Listening to the operator in Slidell yesterday.....he relayed how none of the other hams in his area had come up in the 12 hours since the storm went through, even on simplex...it was very sad listening...

Once the locals figured out they could be eaten, the nutria's numbers began to decline. However, the damage to the levees was already done. Last time we were down there, the workers had their own version of a nutria "soft-taco" they shared with us. It was Ok, but I sure didn't ask for seconds. Great people down there. Sure wish I could find out something about the Avondale shipyard and those folks.

I'm talking about BEFORE things got to this point.

Mayor and/or governor tells everyone on Sunday to get out of town. You get out of town -- and make sure your family and neighbors can get out of town, too. As someone posted here on FR a couple of days ago . . . nobody should be driving out of New Orleans with an empty seat in the car.

Jefferson Parish President Aaron Broussard says there is no plumbing and the sanitary situation is getting nasty. He told WAFB-TV that he is carrying around a bag for his own human waste.

Hope it's a heavy duty bag. No cheesecloth for that task...
