Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

if it gets over 3.5 feet at Bourbon st. it will be from the river

That sounds about right too. I'm having a hard time believing that all this water is just from the lake.

Anything else on the Superdome refugees from CNN? I had to switch to kids' programming again...

CNN ticker: report of a man jumping to his death from the 2nd level of the stadium - which now has reports of 25,000 seeking shelter inside.

Between the casinos and Bourbaon street, maybe the storm had a moral purpose.

Just hush!

And the bonus question is how many other gaping holes are there in disaster plans around the country, at a time when we are worried about dirty bombs or biological attacks as well as natural disasters?

The only thing I could possibly understand stealing is food and water, most especially for the children, elderly, or ill, as there's no means of getting these things to them before the frail die.

The govt. doesn't appear able to bring in food/water supplies...and, for many, there's no way of cooking/sterilization anything or transporting themselves to anything.....even if they took precautions of getting ample food supplies before the hurricane hit....

But there's absolutely no excuse for stealing t.v.'s, dozens of jeans...my word, it's not as if the bomb hit the entire United States and that help won't be coming.....or that copters won't be dropping food stuffs....or something in the next couple of days.....

Someone had to say. Congratulations.

It's NewOrleanians' own fault. Got it.

That's what the jihadis say; Allah's hurricanes striking the infidels.

So, when churches get hit by lightning or destroyed by tornadoes, there's a message in that, too?

Does your Aussie mate think this wouldn't happen in Australia? Australia has it's fine share of criminals that would take advantage in the exact same way. It isn't ugly Americans, it's just plain ugly human beings.

There are criminals in every culture and at every disaster. Anyone who says this is the Ugly American is playing into the hands of those who hate us.

These are our young thugs, present in every civilized country on earth. They only don't exist in places with repressive governments who shoot them on sight. We give them trials and lawyers. And that is the right thing to do.

THey have not shamed me and shouldn't shame any of us.

the plans for most major cities are going to have to include large-scale movement of people by rail -- freight trains, mainly.

Agree with you - they could have used public buses, Greyhound buses, school buses etc., in addition to pre-positioned train cars.

The operative word - of course- is PLAN!!!!!!!!

Army Corp is at main breach...

Initial assesment that water over wall caused it to collapse, second breach as well... closing both breaches is essential.

We lost so many people on 9/11---and those Twin Towers fall and the Pentagon damaged...

BUT, not that many people ended up homeless....this is just different, but in many ways no less disastrous. (except for the loss of life on 9/11, of course).

My question: if the levees broke a day after the brunt of the storm...why did they breach?"

The storm moved extra water into the Lake, putting strain on the levees. Dynamic strain, not just like you pushing against them but with the added force of a moving weight.

This open cracks, and also, along with the rain, turns the earthen sections to wet toothpaste.

Once water finds a way through to the downstream face (as applied to an earthen dam), it's all over. The water will flow and trickle, enlarging the breach, until that section fails.

Many people feared this all along. Until it actually happened, we remained silent so as not to fuel panic. Let the reporters think that the City had dodged the bullet, they might have been right. Those who needed to know were fully aware of the potential years before this storm.

Wrong, the computer models were converging on a SE LA hit as early as Friday morning, the official NHC track was shifted westward to Pascagoula (within 90 miles of NOLA) for the 4pm announcement, with the note that further moves westward were very possible, which indeed happened with the updates Friday night.

why was there NO PLAN to get the people without cars and the marooned tourists OUT? You can't activate what isn't there.

It's the big question for everybody now. You need something that's a) already built; and b) available without high storage overhead.

It strikes me that the use of freight trains would answer the bill. All major cities have railyards. You can carry thousands of people on a single train, and you can also carry along pre-positioned containers of food, equipment, and temporary shelter.

Still gotta deal with getting the people actually to and onto the trains, though.

Looks like high < 20ft concrete wall. Looks like it cracked, then gave way. Maybe something big blew into it and started the crack propagating during the storm. It doesn't look that hard to fix. THey must have given up on it, or are mentally paralyzed.
