Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

If you asked a lot of them, they would probably tell you differently. I'm not defending the looting... find it reprehensible -- I still vividly remember both LA Riots -- but, as long as these people listen to Sharpton, Jackson, Waters, etc... they are going to be oppressed simply because of their oppression is of the making of their own people and they blame the wrong people for their problems. The people in Baghdad KNEW who their REAL oppressor's were, these people do not.

They were probably breached during the storm... the hole just got larger after.

Careful. I suspect this is calculated and opportunistic politics from both.

There is only one radio station still able to broadcast in NO. And one must have radio and batteries. Even cell phones are inoperable.

Can anyone say ESCAPE FROM N.O. Two weeks to get the water out and two months to get power back on.Looking at scenes from biloxi, apartment buildings completely gone but no water.Evacuate NO and after everyone is gone, set a match to it, start over up north near BR. After two months without power very little will be worth salvaging.

They can't do anything with the stolen merchandise....that's why their behavior is even more demented....they can't even use anything they're stealing.....

unless it's food/water.

My question: if the levees broke a day after the brunt of the storm...why did they breach?

They probably got a bit of overwash that started cutting a small ravine that suddenly deepened and widened as the gradient went to work. That's the problem with levees - you take a sluggish stream and give it a gradient if the levee fails.

If there is a leak from the river, we will hear about that one in a hurry.

That's correct. In fact, the river is higher than the city AND the lake. That's what I've been hoping against all along... a breech or break on the river.

Tell your interlocutors that America is a free country, and thus in it you see man at his best and at his worst.

Exactly. Freedom imposes responsibility on the individual. Not all individuals are up to the task.

Actually saw quite a few people running around barefoot...didn't make sense to me with all the glass windows that had been blown out. But yeah, I could see shoes as a necessity once your only pair was wet, muddy, and cruded up, even ripped up by broken glass.

And I heard that FEMA or one of the disaster preparedness groups called the President out of frustration and asked him to intervene because the Governor and Mayor were not taking this seriously enough and that is why he made the call.

Thing to keep in Mind is that the NHC track with landfall at New Orleans, 11PM Friday night, had a Cat 4 landfall for intensity.

For some reason, the people on the rooftop saved a U.S. flag.

Probably to literally use it as a flag to flag down help.
