Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

Please folks...It's MARTIAL LAW...not MARSHALL DILLON.
This is getting worse by the MINUTE...beyond anything in our lifetime...
per Shep (who is doing an excellent job) "they don't know why the water is rising, and it won't stop"
Fox announcing all able to evacuate NO have been ordered to do so.
You and your family are in our prayers. Keep the faith. The next 2-3 days will be very difficult due to communication outages. Hang in there.
"""""If anyone has some information on donating food, clothing etc. to local people or organizations in the Hurricane impact area, please post. I am here in New Jersey and would like to send some items and I know many of my neighbors would like to do the same.
Best wishes for all of you who have suffered in this natural disaster."""""
This is for the Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams. They are the one's who the Red Cross uses to do the actual work. 100% of the funds donated to disaster relief will be used for disaster relief.

Yes, you will be enriched so that you can give even more generously. And when we take your gifts to those who need them, they will break out in thanksgiving to God" (2 Cor. 9:11, NIV).
Hurricane Katrina
Hurricane Katrina made landfall just east of New Orleans at approximately 6 a.m. CDT today as a Category 4 storm. Emergency response officials are predicting it could be one of the most damaging storms in United States history.
American Red Cross has requested that Southern Baptists prepare 300,000 meals a day for 90 days, which could go as high as half a million meals a day.
Mobile kitchens, shower units, clean-up and recovery units, and communication units from more than 20 states have been activated to staging sites in Memphis, Tenn., and Marshall, Tex.
Jim Burton, director of Volunteer Mobilization for NAMB, reported, "We're working right now to determine where our units will set up in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama. We'll be able to assign units on Tuesday, and most should be in place and ready to serve hot meals by Wednesday."
Much of the feeding will be shelter feeding and line feeding, not mobile feeding.
Units and teams from the following conventions have been activated: Northwest, Tennessee, Texas Baptist Men, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Georgia, Florida, Missouri, Arkansas, Alabama, California, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, New Mexico, Noth Carolina, Ohio, and Virginia Baptist Mission Board. Other states are on standby.
I am having the opposite problem... I can't put this in an intellectual box. I am emotionally overwhelmed by it. So upset that I am constantly tearing up...
My husband is urging me to turn off the TV, and listen to a book, because he is worried about my inability to process this tragedy. I may have to do that.
I am disgusted by Shep. And, for the first time, I am disappointed in Fox news' coverage. They have messed up big time, in my book.

Shep Smith just reported martial law declared in New Orleans...

Lib Snubber....My Prayers are with you and your Family right now...and all of New Orleans, and Mississippi.
According to Fox, some of the pumps do work on electricity, some on diesel. The diesel ones will never work while under water. And with no electricity, well the electric ones won't work either.
But with advances in technology they need to re-think that whole set up.
ty capt...skip...
He was just on FOX...he went as far as saying things look "much worse than they did yesterday".
Flooding French Quarter....Marshall Law declared....no water...no electricity.....temp. expected to be 91 degrees today.....everyone has been ordered to evacuate the city....Shep on FOX reporting as he leaves city......flood much worst today than yesterday....don't know the source exactly...fires breaking out.....Dear Jesus I ask for your mercy on the people of NO
Nope. Happened in LA during the Rodney King riots, for example. Sounds like there's a serious need for it in NO, too -- looting and serious crisis management needs.

Are Shep's feet still dry?
"
Isn't it a shame it takes a big catastrophe like this to find out where they cut corners in construction, who
tipped the inspectors etc. It seems natural to find out this stuff later on, that's why it is best for people to
do honest work."
I agree that there is shoddy construction at times, possibly even dishonest inspectors, but in my 25 years in construction, I have found more problems in ability to execute than in dishonesty.
Right off the bat are methods and practices. Like we saw in Andrew, 8d nails hold roof decking better than staples. I believe most guys in the field would have believed the two nearly equal. We don't know it all yet, there is a continual learning process.
People want fancy buildings, not understanding that "round" isn't as easy to build as "square", and that the per foot costs go up considerably, not just a little, when you step away from standard practices. In short, it's more an ability question, than one of ethics. Not selling ability short, a lot of times it's easier to draw it pretty than it is to stand it up pretty and safe.
What can I do to help? Is that info available yet? My heart is breaking for the people in the area affected by this. I just saw a video of a man, last name Jackson, who lost his wife as the roof they were on split apart. He had two young sons by the hands. It's gut-wrenching. I have room in my home. Even though I'm in the North, I can help.
