Really? Now, where are all those people who were holding forth on the threads in the days before the storm that the government should just leave people alone and people were responsible from themselves? Somewhere upthread there was talk of evacuating people from the Dome, and evacuating hospital patients TO the Dome for staging. Can't verify it firsthand, though.

New Orleans is one of the biggest ports in the world. It serves as the terminal for the entire Mississippi-Ohio-Missouri system. It will be rebuilt for that alone.

I appreciate you and the mods immensely.
I am appreciating everyone who is doing anything to do something to help these poor people.
This is as bad as 911.

Um...is that really an issue? I mean, I have no first hand experience in aviation...but I know the sky is pretty damn big....lots of room up there. Put it this way: if you're a media copter, what are you gonna want to go? To a quiet spot, or to where something is happening?
I think they've probably requisitioned the media copters, though. They need all the help they can get.

Why were media helos allowed to fly yesterday but not today?
Uh, probably because conditions deteriorated overnight, emergency response has become better coordinated now that Martial Law has been declared, etc, etc. I think that with ML declared, the state agencies and military, as well as local law enforcement and fire depts, can be much bolder in making decisions without having to as carefully consider legalities, etc.

I just talked to onyx; she is fine in Vicksburg; no power, no nothing; can't make cell calls out but gets them once in a while.
Lots of trees stripped and down, but no major damage. at least at her house; she said Hattiesburg is devastated, according to the MS radio stations.
She's ridden her first hurricane and doesn't EVER want to do it again.

Louisiana Offshore Oil Port refining terminal declared there is no major damage. Are there other encouraging stories showing better than expected damage to oil asstes?
