Several people have requested a thread JUST for images of the storm.
Post them here, please.
ping to #9 (FOG?)
They call it a Flotell...... it houses 450 workers aqnd is tied up to an oil platform when in service.
The flooded ERV is in Missippi from Jackson Tennessee.
The loss of life isn't is large, thank God, but the devastion to a culture and people are still as bad, imo.
By the time this is totaled up the death toll may BE in the
thousands,
I don't think anyone is saying that. But a lot of us just can not imagine leaving our pets to a unknown, possibly horrible fate. As several have mentioned the policy of shelters not taking pets is a big problem. Some shelters should be set up to take crated pets. The animal shelters usually do not have the room. Also I believe that new developments in hurricane prone areas should be required to build their community centers or clubhouses to meet shelter standards. If someone does have to evacuate it would be better if a shelter was close by. People would be a lot less reluctant to evacuate if the shelter was within a couple of miles.
This would seem a logistical problem that should be addressed for future storms. Perhaps someone could arrange to have some vehicles full of cages that could be taken somewhere for some fee. Unfortunately, some do-gooder would probably take legal action against any company that tried to charge a fee even remotely high enough to make such an effort worthwhile (charging "price gouging"), though even a $2,500 fee (including pre-paid boarding for a small animal up to three months) would probably have a lot of takers.

There leaders juyst have to get them out so we can help.
Thanks for the pictures. It's heart-rending. My boyfriend is from Mississippi (up north in Balzoni), but I saved a bunch for him to see this.
This is so sad. I really hate this happening to all of those that live in La.
Maybe he has no water and could not even find any to "loot." Let's not lump all the looters together, some may just be trying to stay alive.
Also, my husband got back tonight from Birmingham, AL. He spent last night there in a Hampton Inn with no electricity. They did give him two glow sticks, though. He said his flight there (he left Houston Monday at around 5pm) was like a rollercoaster.
Your idea is a very good one and is already done in some areas down here.
In the Redlands, farm land in southern S. Dade, their are land owners who have built hurricane "proof" stables for people to board their horses in the event of a hurricane.
Also some of the vets here allow people who are leaving to board their pets at the vet facility for a reduced cost. Obviously their space is limited, and thereis no control over the workers at the office being able to care for the animals in the event of a major storm.
If I knew of a company such as the one you suggested, i'd be willing to use them if it meant my animals would be safe.
Nature Conservancy and the rest of GangGreen went to Georgia after they socialized Florida into FloriDUH. But Bubba the Neck asked if what they were proposing would "have anything to do with muh deer lease?"
Bubba the Neck and his buds sent GangGreen down to defeat 2 to 1.
GangGreen now steers well clear of Georgia. Yea Bubba!
Too bad FloriDUH is populated with waaay too many Liberals who look down their noses at hunters.
It was in for maintainance . It broke free and the storm blew it UPSTREAM against the bridge.
