Mayor: 200 trapped on Ninth Ward rooftops; bodies floating in Bywater

Mayor Ray Nagin said that 200 people were stranded on rooftops in the Lower Ninth Ward and several “bodies are floating in the water” in the Bywater neighborhood and in Eastover.

Nagin made the announcement in his first press briefing after Hurricane Katrina slammed just east of the city, but did plenty of devastation to New Orleans.

Nagin said that the 200 stranded people included 20 police officers who were riding out the storm at their homes in preparation to take over shifts from other officers. He said that boats would be dispatched on rescue missions later in the afternoon.

Mayor Nagin issued a "boil water" recommendation for water in the city - except for Algiers and the CBD due to a water main line break that may have compromised the water.

Nagin said at least 20 buildings in the city had collapsed and that it might be 48 hours before residents would be allowed back to their homes to assess the damage.

No doubt it's been posted, and the usual suspects are weighing in that Buchanan is an out of touch isolationist paleocon.."

Yes he is. How many votes has he gotten for president, combined, in his three runs?

To hell with the snakes, alligators and looters, think of the disease outbreaks with dirty infected water everywhere and people tredging through it.

Much better to let hundreds of thousands of our citizens die from disease and live in abject misery while one of our largest port cities turns into Atlantis. /sarcasm

Well, I do find comfort in the realization that my ideas are in line with men like Washington, Jefferson, Madison, Henry, and the rest of the real patriots who formed this country.

I guess Ben Franklin was right to suspect that our republic would devolve into a democracy where the President responds to the masses without regard to the legality of his actions.

When do you think the Republican abandoned its stance on limited government and the rule of law? After all, it's clear by the opinions on this thread that most FReepers are perfectly content to abandon the ideals of capitalism and federalism in certain circumstances, though none of you can actually explain when we should do so and when we should actually obey the laws we have established.

I wholeheartedly agree with you. This disaster could have been made a lot better with some foresight. We need to learn to take care of each other before and after something like this happens. God bless all of them.

That's right, OF. God honors our sacrifices for others. He's the only one I care about pleasing, really. If He's pleased with me, it doesn't matter where my money went or what others think.

I think for the most part you are correct. Perhaps these people should read "Sockdolager", it gives a great persepective on your views.

My point is that federal tax money should only be used for legitimate federal issues, such as rebuilding the oil drilling infrastructure and the shipping port at the mouth of the Mississippi.

I'm not a hot shot like my friend rdb (I'm wearing a big smile right now), but let a little pipsqueak like me ask a question or two about your above statement:

Who will be rebuilding the oil drilling infrastructure and manning the shipping port at the mouth of the Mississippi? Where are those folks going to live? The commute from Kansas is going to be a real bitch.

I don't know about all that. I'm just doing my best to be a kool kat while in this wheelchair.

I have no idea where the people will live who need to do work in and around New Orleans.

Who said anything about relief workers commuting from Kansas?

If you are referring to my earlier post, I suggested that those who choose to live in a place below sea level do so at their own peril and that it is wrong for them to expect me to pay their bills in the event that the inevitable happens.

If they were unwilling or unable to cope with a disaster like Katrina, they should have moved somewhere else long ago. It is not a surprise to most people that this happened, it was just a matter of time.

Perhaps you have a legitimate counter argument to my point of view rather than arguing straw men?

Did you decide to come of the closet and admit that you are okay with the socialist democracy under which we currently live where the President can do whatever the majority of Americans want him to do?

Or are you ignoring those who challenge your point of view?

I dont' accept your premise. I don't appreciate your lack of integrity in assigning arguments to me that I'm not even making.

You go ahead and continue to bear false witness. Be my guest. I no longer care what you think.

Give the ideology a rest.

These are Americans in dire need.

If you're so het up about what you refer to as our "socialist democracy", stop using the highways and stop drinking the clean water that was at least partially paid for by the tax dollars of those pour souls.

"stop using the highways and stop drinking the clean water that was at least partially paid for by the tax dollars of those pour souls."

I only use the portion of each that I pay for.

:-)

Are you a shut-in?

You are the most pathetic piece of filth I've come across on this forum. Taunting and being purposely disingenuous is childish and you seem to revel in that.

You've been asked some great questions about what you would do if in charge etc, and you've answered none of them.

You use only the portion of the roads and such that you "pay for"? I don't know if you on these boards much, but if you are I won't forget you and you'll be noted on every thread you are on as one of the forum's resident cranks along with LIberal Larry, Modernman and the others.

Take your latin and shove it up your ass mr conservative-of-all-time.

"You are the most pathetic piece of filth I've come across on this forum."

I take that as a compliment. Thank you.

Anytime people are reduced to insults, it speaks volumes of their ability to address issues with coherently well thought positions.

As for what I would do, I have stated my positions clearly several times. If you do not wish to acknowledge them, I cannot be held responsible.

1. Federal tax dollars need to be spent on restoring the NO shipping port
2. Federal tax dollars need to be spent to repair the oil drilling operations in the Gulf of Mexico
3. Private money needs to be spent on providing "the needy" with food, water, shelter, income during unemployment, assistance with paying insurance premiums, etc...

If you expect me to have entire logistical plans worked out for the actual implementation of these relief efforts, you have me confused with somebody who is employed by the government.

I have 2 jobs of my own as well as a home to maintain, a wife and a child to support, and other responsibilties which consume much of my time.

It was my assumption that King George was in charge of such planning, in between his speeches about "spreading freedom and liberty" and "saving Social Security" of course...

It is apparent to even the casual reader of this thread that you have been put in your place. You join other insignificant ankle-biters, such as Pat Buchanan and Ron Paul, who, like Scrooge on Christmas morning, count your pennies and kick your suffering fellow Americans to the curb.

You and the other Constipationists on this thread, by your own words, continue to shrink your constituency and marginalize yourselves even further.

"My place" ??

I'm just a guy with an opinion. I'm not here to insult others or to attempt to prove any sort of superior intellect.

If you feel better believing that I in any way want to "kick anyone to the curb", go ahead.

However, I can continue to rest easy knowing that I am true to my own beliefs and though unpopular as they may be, I have arrived at them through the best application of logic and reason as my brain can manage.

As for the number of others who agree with me, I can again only point to the valiant minority of colonists willing to step up and challenge the British army. They too were once a relatively "insignificant" group of men at one time thought of as foolish ideologues.

Hopefully you can recognize that the darkness you perceive to be in my heart is nothing but a projection of that which is within yourself, as evidenced by the tone of your commentary.

I guess I can add Walter Williams to the list of those who agree with me on the legality of government "charity".
