Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

The weather folks are comparing this to Hurricane Andew - another the last Cat 5 storm to hit the US in 1992.

Luckily I got my kids to leave New Orleans yesterday afternoon, they didn't want to as it ruined their weekend with my daughter's fiance's family. It took them almost 8 hours to make it home. They said I-10 was aleady getting bad. They took 90 most of the way and cut down HWY 146 so as not to have to go through Houston. They caravaned her in 4 carloads. I have a housefull this morning and I am thankful for each and every one of them.

Pray for the folks who have no way to get out of that city. If it continues to strengthen, it's gonna be bad, real bad.

***This is something we have been discussing in our home this morning. I fear mass casualties in the Superdome. If the structural integrity holds, they will be an island for days or even weeks.***

They'll fly pontoon planes in with supplies, and emergency evacuations.

I disagree. if given the choice (a bad choice mind you), I would take the flooding from the lake, rather then the eastern part of the eye pushing the dome of water and 150MPH winds onto me from the sea.

If the media knew what they were talking about they would not be frieghening people in new orleans.

It appears that it is YOU who doesn't know what they are talking about.

LTNS....going to catch up to the end of the thread, then take a break, get fed, get everything else out of the way...it's going to be a long night.

We need to see about chilling some of the wild eyes out. This may be rough, but there's nothing like panic over inaccurate early reports to make any situation even worse than it actually is.

I'm praying also for your step daughter! My son is camping at Mustang Island TX, which I know is far from Katrina, but the weatherunderground said they will be having heavy tides and talked about the possibility of people getting stranded. And of course, I cannot reach him on his cellphone. I do hope they have rangers out there who shoo the goofy kids back to the mainland!

If this is as bad as it looks like it will be, I pray that it will not be America's disaster equivalent to the Dec 26 tsunami in Asia. Will the U.S. get help from other countries? Do we have the capacity to help oureselves sufficiently. I'm sure Canada will send power crews down. They did last year. Can or will any other country help a country that has been massively generous in the past?

I'm stunned.
Last year, they drove 18 hours to come up here for refuge (September hurricane). I called them my hurricane refugees.
When I got word that it increased so rapidly last night, my husband and I had thought they were on their way and we'd be hearing from them.

Well, as of 10 or so EST this morning, they hadn't yet and they were wondering about mandatory evacuation. I flipped my lid. They told us they are leaving. Like others, they thought that it would turn.
If necessary, we can max out the credit cards to get them up here.
I'm ballistic that they waited so long. It is so out of character.

Hospitals were not being evacuated, to much of a problem to move the sick. All doctors, fire and police were asked to stay. According to NOLA mayor.

Nursing, homes, don't know.

What about food and water? 50,000 people in the Dome

And non functioning toilet facilities, maybe no lights or air circulation. Gonna suck big time I would think.

As for long-term consequences of this storm, does anyone understand if this could possibly be the type of event that causes the Mississippi to divert it's main flow into the Atchafalaya? Another source of long-term economic woes, to be sure.
