Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

All day I've had flashbacks to scenes from the History's Channel's recent special on the hurricane that hit Galveston in 1900.

Terrifying.

This is one time I hope the media's overplaying its hand.

I have to think that anyone who doesn't leave Plaquemines Parish has a very slim chance of survival.

leilani,

I hope what I asked didn't add to your fears! I didn't mean to sound so morbid. I just didn't know what happened to people buried above ground.

I'm sorry if I sounded mean and uncaring!

Well don't chastise me. I like Shep. I'm wondering if he can or will get out safely. Sorry if that offends you.

While I hope it is media hype, I fear that that time has run out and the evitable worst-case scenario could come to fruition this time –

You know... I've been thinking that same thing all day. I am listening to wall to wall coverage from FOX NEWS on my radio as I work outside, and although some of their statements sound too fantastic to believe, it really has me wondering that maybe this time...(I am doing hit and run here to keep up with ya'all.)

I was just out in Maine and marveled at the force of the ocean. For a Midwesterner it can humble you pretty quickly. I tried kayaking in some choppy water in the bay we were in, and I turned back.

Homeland Security is off base here!

No offense, but the folks sheltering in the Superdome might disagree.

I just spoke to my brother: he's still 40 miles east of Houston...and it's taken him "about 12 hours" to make what is usually a 6 hour drive to Houston at the most.

If you're trying to leave NO now, it may well be too late to avoid the storm.

He really didn't say.

I've heard a few scattered references to this trough over the last day or so.

it's hard to say whether Katrina is too big for the trough to affect it or not.

A minute ago (on Fox), the announcer said that katrina had made a very slight westward edge.

5pm shifted *slightly* west, but it's almost dead on NO.

This is the most powerful/sizeable storm I have seen this close to the U.S. mainland. I fear images out of the region will be shocking to a degree only comparable to the recent tsunami damage (on a much smaller scale, of course). We are within 12 hours now, and there are no signs this will come in as anything less than a cat5. The only thing we can do is pray it manages to miss the highest population centers.

I'm headed to NY now, I will be back on later tonight hopefully.
