Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

I've got a bad feeling about the Dome. Because of the curvature of the exterior I believe that a lateral 175 mph+ wind will lift the roof right off. Doomed structure.

I read somewhere else that Katrina is basically a huge F3 tornado in a way. And when I looked at the category scale, an F3 is 158-206 mph - which is what the storm winds near the eye wall are, and the characteristic damage (just from the winds) for a F3 is: Roof and some walls torn off well constructed houses; trains overturned; most trees in forest uprooted.

Something to think about as the storm comes in.

Shep needs to get out of there now. Just let these people take their chance with mother nature.

I know what Agnes did to some of the cemetaries around here, washed some of the coffins buried up and away. That wasn't pretty. But aren't most of the above ground burials around NO done in vaults? Those might actually withstand flood waters better I would think.

Drink now to ease your fears but stop in time to be strong enough to save yourself when it hits. A drunk doesn't have a chance.

Wind speed DOWN to 165 MPH...

That's the good news; the bad is that the minimum pressure is reported at 902 mb.
