Katrina is emerging into the very warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico early this morning after making landfall in SE Florida, then tracking SW. Thus far, she is well ahead of schedule, leaving at least four fatalities in her wake, and well over 1 million without electricity.

'This is really like a nightmare'

Santa Rosa Island Authority General Manager W.A. “Buck” Lee says work already has begun on Pensacola Beach to prepare the island for a possible Hurricane Katrina strike.
Lee said crews began moving heavy equipment off the island this morning to a spot near Naval Live Oaks, north of U.S. 98.
“We’re getting ready,” he said. “This is really like a nightmare.”
Lee was contacted by The Weather Channel’s Jim Cantore earlier today to schedule a Saturday morning interview on the beach.
“It’s hard to believe it’s happening again,” Lee said.
Lee said no plans have been made about evacuating businesses and residents from the island. Discussions on those plans, he said, could begin Saturday.
On Sunday, if Katrina still is headed toward the Panhandle, crews will begin moving the beach’s lifeguard stands and trucks to a safe place. Lee said he hopes of all of the island’s efforts will just be precautionary.
“Hopefully, a low-pressure (system) will come and move it away from here,” he said. “But we’ll continue to prepare for the worst.”
Hmmmmm, didn't take Jeb much effort to get the National guard out... lucky for the people of Fla they aren't starving to death.
I love it when Gov. Bush effortlessly slips into Spanish in these press conferences. Must drive the Dem strategists nuts, taking away one of their race/ethic cards.

High wind advisory driving north over the Skyway. No flashing lights during the return trip--and it seemed the winds were a tad stronger then. Go figure.
South end of the bay is very choppy.
You will not get my thanks, I know Houston is far west but I have this bad feeling. Have been dreaming of tornadoes for last two weeks for some reason.
