Iraq draft says laws must conform to Islam -text
BAGHDAD, Aug 22 (Reuters) - A draft constitution for Iraq to be presented to parliament on Monday will make Islam "a main source" for legislation and ban laws that contradict religious teachings, members of the parliamentary drafting panel said.

This guy is good friends with the Iranian mullahs.
Unacceptable!!
Doubtful. Iran is about 90% Shia, so the people mostly agree with what Islam means (that is a massive oversimplification, of course. The current unrest in Iran seems to suggest that the people there don't agree on much about how their government should be run).
Iraq, on the other hand, is much less monolithic. Any government that wants to survive is going to have to figure out how to balance Shia, Sunni and Kurd views on religion and government.
So, at the end of the day, you'll probably end up with a government that outlaws the sale of alcohol, imposes more restrictive controls on public morality and what is transmitted over the airwaves, bans pornogrpahy etc.
Is that a truly free society? Probably not, but let me point out that there are significant numbers of conservatives in this country that would not be opposed to such restriction here, either.
Of course they are going to base their laws on Islam, our laws are based on Christianity. Did anyone think they were going to base their laws on Hinduism ? Women are the key to defeating Islamofacism, they must have equal rights and Islamofacism will die.
support dried up for two reasons:
- the military situation on the ground never improved enough to make americans feel that we are turning the corner. the MSM was able to use those to push a daily drumbeat of negative news from iraq.
- the white house communications apparatus stinks, they never had a positive message to counter the MSM.
this is the result of letting support dry up - you then don't have the political capital, the "cushion", needed to make the tough decisions when the flash point arrives. and right now, we are at the point of having to make one of those hard decisions - should we tell this interim government to get the hell out of there and start again, or limp through this and see what happens.
You are assuming that the current effort for an Iraqi constitution is going to set up an Islamic state, ala Iran. That is the MSM meme talking.
No more American lives for Islam! Bring our troops home now.
Regarding Islam and the constitution: it was agreed upon that no laws that are against the widely agreed upon values of Islam can be issued and no laws that are against the values of democracy and human rights can be issued.
...is quite reasonable and actually may be quite visionary. I think this passes, and I think it means the closest thing possible to a free republic in the middle east. Hell, EVERY SINGLE constitution in the Middle East, including Lebanon, has a reference to "Islam". Except Turkey. Once again, Sunni & Shia do NOT equal Wahhabi.
You don't always get what you want in a Democracy.
At least they don't have a Democrat party yet!
oh please
I also like to point out something.. When our Constitution was signed we had slavery.. I don't see any slaves in Iraq... When our Constitution was signed woman in this country was not allowed to vote. From what I have been seeing, woman in Iraq will be allowed to vote.... Instead of reading misleading headlines, we should dig deeper into the story instead of going Chicken Little..
Sounds like Theocracy to me.
that is true, women's rights are the key to stopping islamofacism. any "givebacks" in this new constitution in that area, and its over.
I am only pointing out that you believe that's its impossible for that to happen - it isn't.
I sure as hell wouldn't accept as fact anything rooters had to say about this.
Besides if I'm not mistaken the constitution has to be ratified by a 75% vote from the people, that percentage of vote will require a compromise. In other words this isn't the final draft and is probably being spun by rooters in the most negative way it can.
But you know hey we could always just go back to bases in Saudia Arabia and fly the "no fly zones". That was really great such a nice arrangement.......
We were and are there to establish a base. We have done that.
Not impossible, just very unlikely.
This whole thing is about to implode. Islam or no Islam, the Sunnis will veto it unless the federalism language is removed.
hey, I never thought that in this country, the courts could be used to force someone to give up their property to another private concern. but it happened.
the point of that being - let the wrong people rise into the power ranks, with twisted motives, and anything could happen.
Some people here seem to expect a full-blown Jeffersonian democracy to appear in Iraq virtually overnight. That's not going to happen.
And if we try to dictate the new constitution and its terms to the Iraqi people, they will simply end up rejecting or ignoring it.
