I'm not. That's one reason why I opposed this invasion -- and sending American troops to die in Iraq -- from the beginning. The country was a 4th rate military power, didn't have WMDs, wasn't being 9-11, and couldn't be "changed" into a democracy. Iraq is already a good step down the road towards becoming a democracy. It just won't be a democracy exactly like our own. Not really surprising. American-style democracy has never really been exportable. Democracy, with local characteristics, is a different matter.
lot of blood spilled in behalf of utopian fantasies by policy gurus who almost uniformly don't have any kids or kin in the military.
IIRC, the members of Congress have a higher rate of children and relatives in the military than the population as a whole.

we did not conduct the same kind of war against iraq, that we did against germany and japan.

if US public support for the war was 65%, Bush could tell this interim government to take a hike and we could start over. we can't do that. You've got that backwards. If our President would tell them to take a hike and do this thing right... then the support would be 65%.

I agree. Sharia is the antithesis of democracy. They can put lipstick on that pig all they want by calling it a Constitution but it's still a pig. (if this report is accurate)

no, it would drop to 30%. if Bush went to a microphone tonight and proclaimed that the interim government has failed, and we had to start over, US public approval for the war would not rise to 65%. that's a fantasy.
To: Warren_Piece
Our president never had higher support than when he drew the line in the sand. When he promised the American people retaliation for 9-11. When he said to the world it was our way or the highway. That is what our people expect if he intends to send our guys into combat.
When this became a political war, when we backed out of fallujah for fear of angering moderate muslims... etc etc.. that's when the support began to fade.

Just how many Wahhabists do you think are in Iraq? Sharia is a Wahhabist concept. The lack of discernment I'm seeing today from supposedly serious adults is shocking.

Because western pornagraphy, alcoholism and sluttish dress are the true indicators of freedom?
Yes. Freedom means the right to choose things that you and I might not like. Freedom also means the right to make the wrong choices.

so are you predicting that the constitution will be voted down?
To: oceanview
I don't agree with you. Just go back and listen to the speaches that were given and the support he had. And look at what was being said when the support dried up.
Americans will get behind a president who is serious about eliminating terrorism. But they are not interested in fighting a politically correct war. That's the bottom line.

You expected a libertarian republic in the Middle East? Sheesh, even if Bush dictated the constitution itself, you wouldn't get that. He's no libertarian, you know.

so if the new iraq wanted to become a terror state, that's OK with you?

"The WH told us we were going to plant freedom, a democracy... and one that would help end terrorism. That's what I expect them to do (even though I know it's a pipe dream)"
You seem to believe that once the people tasted freedom they would throw away their religion and join the kingdom of Jesus Christ.
The White House NEVER said we were going to Iraq to convert them to good Christians.
There are Muslim democracy's in the world and Iraq is one of them.
Don't let your blind bigotry destroy your common sense.

First, Ridiculous statement.
Second, I would wait to see the final document before you all go into hysterics. (Shades of Bashing Bush when everyone KNEW Judge Edith Clement was his SC nominee)
Third, according to
http://iraqthemodel.blogspot.com/ which is running commentary on the constitution process:
"Regarding Islam and the constitution: it was agreed upon that no laws that are against the widely agreed upon values of Islam can be issued and no laws that are against the values of democracy and human rights can be issued."

Might I suggest a different foreign policy approach...
