MADISON, Wis. (AP) Tammy Markee has some simple advice for President Bush on how to handle Cindy Sheehan.
``Be a man. Give her the respect she deserves. Sit down and talk with her,'' the 33-year-old Madison legal assistant said.
About two hundred people of the same mind joined Markee outside the state Capital in a candlelight vigil Wednesday night to support Sheehan, the California mother camping outside Bush's Texas ranch until the president explains why her soldier-son had to die in Iraq.
Liberal organizations Move On, True Majority and Democracy for America say they organized about 1,600 similar vigils around the country Wednesday evening in a national show of solidarity with Sheehan. Milwaukee and Racine were among other Wisconsin cities where vigils were held.
The crowd outside the Capitol spilled off the sidewalk as twilight waned in Madison. People sang ``America the Beautiful,'' ``This Land is Your Land'' and ``This Little Light of Mine,'' substituting ``George Bush doesn't scare me'' for some of the lyrics. Everyone, it seemed, held signs that read ``Meet with Cindy,'' ``Go Cindy'' or ``America Stands with Cindy.''
Carol Berglund, 56, of Madison, had a sign on the back of her bicycle reading, ``It's time for peace. Stop the war.'' She said she thinks the Bush administration has lied about every aspect of the war, from weapons of mass destruction to other faulty intelligence.
``I don't think we ever should have gone there. I think it's immoral to be the starters of a war, to be the aggressors,'' Berglund said.
Chris O'Dell, a 32-year-old atmospheric research scientist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, said if he could say one thing to Sheehan, it would be, ``You have hundreds of thousands of people behind you and keep it up.''
Sheehan, of Vacaville, Calif., lost her 24-year-old son, Casey, in Iraq last year. Sheehan and other families met with Bush two months after he was killed, in June 2004.
But she set up camp outside Bush's Crawford, Tex., ranch earlier this month, saying the 2004 meeting didn't satisfy her and it came before reports surfaced about faulty intelligence. More than 100 anti-war protesters have joined her, and she has vowed to stay put throughout Bush's monthlong Texas vacation.
The White House earlier this week issued a statement saying Bush sympathizes with Sheehan, but the president has given no indication he will meet with her.
State Republican Party chairman Rick Graber and party spokeswoman Christine Mangi didn't return messages from The Associated Press Wednesday evening seeking comment about the vigils being held in the state.
FreeRepublic.com, which holds rallies to support troops and to counter anti-war demonstrations, called the vigils a publicity stunt.
Ann Trachtenberg, 55, a state Department of Revenue auditor who attended the Capitol vigil, said her daughter's friend, 22-year-old Army Cpl. Mark Maida of Madison, was killed in May by a roadside bomb in Iraq. She said she doesn't think Bush will ever meet with Sheehan again, but she came to the vigil hoping ``maybe America will wake up.''
Betsy Hambrick, 47, a Madison social worker, came to the rally with her 9-year-old daughter Freya, who held a sign with a drawing of Bush with gigantic ears. It read ``Bush's choices are bad'' and ``Go Cindy.''
Hambrick said she showed up because she doesn't want her daughter to grow up in the shadow of war, as she did during the Vietnam era. She said Sheehan is brave and Bush must meet with her.
``He's really not handling it like a real Texas man. They don't back down from a challenge,'' Hambrick said. ``He's not living like a real wild west man like he thinks he is.''
Glad to see that the WI GOP isn't giving these people the time of day.
Madison Wisconsin Social worker = LIBERAL.
>>>``Be a man. Give her the respect she deserves. Sit down and talk with her,'' the 33-year-old Madison legal assistant said.>>>
Betcha 10 bucks this nitwit has no idea he already has!
Thanks to MSM, only a percentage of Americans know that he has done just already. And she praised him. I hate this media, I truly do. And the hard leaning leftists say it's biased towards the right? Crazy.
That's us....:-)
For Bush to give in to this kind of low-level, trashy loser, would make a mockery of the Presidency. We have enough problems with that already, thanks mainly to Clinton.
Bush should forget this street trash exists. And so should the MSM if they had any class at all. But they don't. They are liberals...
These trashy people are hopeless. George W. Busy IS the President of the United States and should not be expected to meet with any ne'r do well protesters at his ranch.
`He's really not handling it like a real Texas man. They don't back down from a challenge,''
Really???
Maybe that's why he is conducting a war on terrorism.
He is.
Just like the Left used to use video of the cops using their batons and left out the part where they were throwing bags of urine and feces and golf balls with nails driven through them at the cops just before heads started getting knocked.
He met with her, once. The only way to win this game is not to play.
She also said she was going to drive a stake through his "black heart."
Right. Invite her right on down.
Can you imagine what Slick's people would have done to Sheehan had her son died in Waco/Somalia/Balkans/1st WTC bombing/U.S. Embassy bombings? She'd be at the bottom of the Mississippi River and her death listed by the MSM as "self-inflicted gunshot wound."
That explains much of it. Many protesters are perpetual students at one of the country's most left-wing radicalized universities.
Americans are a worse threat to America than terrorists.
A united, sane country could stand against them. People like this, who can't deal rationally with simple facts, and an anti-American agenda-driven press, are a greater threat.
If W is a real man, he'll meet with this woman? She deserves it?
He has done. How many meetings does she deserve? Given her brain-itchingly inane statements, what information does she not have access to?
If she deserves two meetings, does every parent who's lost a child deserve two meetings? How many meetings would that make? If not, then what makes her special, besides her vile stupidity and disrepsect for her fallen hero of a son? When would the President have time to do his job?
I'll just stop there, but not for lack of more.
Dan
If he talks to her, I hope he tells her to go to hell.
