Durbin offered proof of column (Turley's)
Washington Times ^ | August 15, 2005 | Charles Hurt

Posted on 08/15/2005 12:12:08 AM PDT by Antioch

A law professor who used Senate Minority Whip Richard J. Durbin as a source for a column last month about federal Judge John G. Roberts Jr. -- a column that Mr. Durbin later disputed -- has a taped phone message that he says proves the accuracy of his reporting.

"The taped message is consistent with my notes as well as my email and telephone communications with editors," George Washington University law professor Jonathan Turley wrote in a letter earlier this month to Mr. Durbin. "There was never a question as to the accuracy of the [column]. The only issue ever raised by your staff was whether you would be mentioned in the article."

In a column last month in the Los Angeles Times, Mr. Turley wrote that during a private meeting with Mr. Durbin, Judge Roberts "was asked by Sen. Richard Durbin [Illinois Democrat] what he would do if the law required a ruling that his church considers immoral," Mr. Turley wrote.

"Roberts appeared nonplused and, according to sources in the meeting, answered after a long pause that he would probably have to recuse himself," wrote Mr. Turley, who added that it was "the wrong answer."

Conservatives immediately accused Mr. Durbin of applying a religious "litmus test" to the Roberts confirmation, and Mr. Durbin said the column was inaccurate.

"I don't know who was his source," Joe Shoemaker, Mr. Durbin's spokesman, said the day the column ran. "Whoever the source was either got it wrong or Jonathan Turley got it wrong."

In the message, Mr. Shoemaker made no objection to the accuracy of the recusal story..."[t]he only condition under which you can use that is to not identify our office, not identify Durbin, and to say that this came up in the course of several meetings with several senators."

The most disturbing element of this is that the media will not print bold faced lies. The quote didn't come duringthe course of several meetings. I came from one office, from one senator. I'll tell you the truth as long as you lie about where you got it? Wow...the MSM is admitting they lie on a daily basis, and America is catching on....a brave new conservative world!!!!

FR is positively backlogged dealing with Liberal lies. Durbin's butting in and we're not even done with Franken!
We need a "RAT Exposure of the Week" thread as a regular feature.

Well, hell, imagine that: Dick Durbin, liberal Democrat lawyer-Senator LIES. I am shocked, I tell you: shocked.

true enough, but Durbin is of particular interest to me because my father went to school with him and was a good friend of his. For years, I have tried to convince my dad that this man was not the man he thought he knew. Luckily my father passed away before the whole Gitmo-traitor crap.

It's very funny knowing full-well that this man along with most Illinois politicians have one use for blacks and that is for votes. Outside of that, they don't care a whiff about them. They are truly racist slime, and now they've become anti-american.

Oops. Not what Durbin wanted to hear. Sometimes chickens really do come home to roost.

Say what you want about Turley's leanings but his integrity is unquestioned. I believed him without the "proof."
