Hi WCG...it may have no connection. But the missing (presumed dead) honeymooner from Connecticut was on the cruise ship in Turkish waters when he went missing. Odd events on cruise ships always remind me of the Jewish gentleman who was thrown overboard in his wheelchair by Islamics (back in the 80's?) I believe the name of the cruise ship was Aquilla Lauro (sp?).
Oct 7, 1985
Four heavily armed Palestinian terrorists in October hijack the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro, carrying more than 400 passengers and crew, off Egypt. The hijackers demand that Israel free 50 Palestinian prisoners. The terrorists killed a disabled American tourist, 69-year-old Leon Klinghoffer, and threw his body overboard with his wheelchair.
After a two-day drama, the hijackers surrendered in exchange for a pledge of safe passage. But when an Egyptian jet tries to fly the hijackers to freedom, U.S. Navy F-14 fighters intercept it and force it to land in Sicily. The terrorists are taken into custody by Italian authorities.
(When asked if the operation should proceed to force down the EyptiAir plane carrying Abul Abbas and other terrorists who had hijacked the Achille Lauro, President Ronald Reagan said: "Good God! They've murdered an American here. Let's get on with it.". US Resolve Political Quotes)
I've taken several blasts the last couple of days too. Funny thing, the blasters never take time to read the CFR report. Seventy pages is way over the sound bite limit.
Thanks. :)
I didn't read the book, but saw the movie. It's been too long ago. I don't remember much about it.

The FBI warned local police agencies this week that al-Qaida-linked terrorists might use fuel trucks as weapons to attack Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, but officials stressed Thursday the warning was based on uncorroborated intelligence.
Using a computer network, FBI officials in Los Angeles passed along details Tuesday of a possible threat to law enforcement agencies primarily in California, said local FBI spokeswoman Laura Eimiller.
Though intelligence bulletins usually say how reliable the information is, this particular bulletin had no such disclaimer.
The bulletin warned police that terrorists could use fuel tankers in future assaults in the three cities, according to a law enforcement source who asked to remain anonymous because of the sensitivity of the situation.
That warning has not been substantiated, according to a second law enforcement official who ask for anonymity for the same reason. It was unclear where the information originated and why the bulletin was sent without a statement describing its reliability.
Thank you all4one.
And let's add just these words: train, truck and bus as a news search, too.

SANTA MONICA Santa Monica police say suspicious activity has drawn their attention to three men, recently spotted on the Santa Monica pier.
Detectives say three Middle Eastern individuals were videotaping the pier in a suspicious manner. It happened three weeks ago. Apparently, a citizen saw the trio taking pictures at the pier and the surrounding area. That citizen then called police.
The same three individuals were also seen taking suspicious video in two other communities. The individuals have been identified, but no arrests have been made. Police are releasing few details about the case.

FBI warns US police of possible terrorist attacks
By ASSOCIATED PRESS
LOS ANGELES
ARTICLE SNIPPET: "The FBI warned local police agencies this week that al-Qaida-linked terrorists might use fuel trucks as weapons to attack Los Angeles, New York and Chicago, but officials stressed Thursday the warning was based on uncorroborated intelligence.

Note: The following WORLDWIDE CAUTION is current as of this posting:
===
http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/pa/pa_1161.html
PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE
Office of the Spokesman
This information is current as of today, Thu Aug 11 2005 19:08:23 GMT-0700.
Worldwide Caution
August 02, 2005
This Public Announcement updates information on the continuing threat of terrorist actions and violence against Americans and interests overseas. This supersedes the Worldwide Caution dated March 8, 2005 and expires on February 2, 2006.
The Department of State remains concerned about the continued threat of terrorist attacks, demonstrations and other violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests overseas. Americans are reminded that demonstrations and rioting can occur with little or no warning. Ongoing events in Iraq have resulted in demonstrations and associated violence in several countries; such events are likely to continue for the foreseeable future. Nation-wide elections in Afghanistan scheduled for mid-September may also trigger violent anti-American actions.
Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks against U.S. interests in multiple regions, including Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. These attacks may employ a wide variety of tactics to include assassinations, kidnappings, hijackings and bombings. Extremists may elect to use conventional or non-conventional weapons, and target both official and private interests. The latter may include facilities where U.S. citizens and other foreigners congregate or visit, including residential areas, business offices, clubs, restaurants, places of worship, schools, hotels and public areas.
In the wake of the July 2005 London bombings and the March 2004 train attacks in Madrid, Americans are reminded of the potential for terrorists to attack public transportation systems. In addition, extremists may also select aviation and maritime services as possible targets.
U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. For additional information, please refer to A Safe Trip Abroad found at http://travel.state.gov.
U.S. Government facilities worldwide remain at a heightened state of alert. These facilities may temporarily close or periodically suspend public services to assess their security posture. In those instances, U.S. embassies and consulates will make every effort to provide emergency services to U.S. citizens. Americans abroad are urged to monitor the local news and maintain contact with the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate.
As the Department continues to develop information on any potential security threats to U.S. citizens overseas, it shares credible threat information through its Consular Information Program documents, available on the internet at http://travel.state.gov. In addition to information on the internet, travelers may obtain up-to-date information on security conditions by calling 1-888-407-4747 toll-free in the U.S. or outside the U.S. and Canada on a regular toll line at 1-202-501-4444.

Okay, second hazmat waste disposal plant to go up in recent days. It's not that hard to secrete an explosive payload in a hazwaste container, label it as something else, and send it on its way. These trucks pick up the container, which is sealed at the sender's site, and store until it is either burned or neutralized in some way.
Thanks for the ping. There are so many important terror-related stories going on and it's all Aruba all the time. Don't get me wrong, I feel for Natalie's family and I have been following that story closely as well, but it's turned into a daily cable news soap. We're lukcy to 2 minutes of on-air time with Steve Emerson.
A hail storm in the Arizona desert? Sounds freaky. Is that common this time of year?
THANKS for the info and for following this SlowBoat407.
Apparently their record is far from sterling. There was a "fireball" reported there in March and other safety lapses over the last several years.
