JERUSALEM (AP) -- A passenger on an Israeli bus opened fire on Thursday, killing three people, an Israeli police spokesman told Channel 2 TV, in an apparent argument among passengers. Five other people were wounded. The TV report said the gunman, in an Israeli army uniform, was captured by police. The gunfire erupted as the bus was on a road in Israel's north near the town of Shfaram. The spokesman told Channel 2 that the gunman was a soldier, three people were killed and several others wounded, and the gunman was captured. Channel 2 said the incident was not a terror attack.

Jewish gunman kills four on bus in Arab town
By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent, Haaretz Service and Agencies
A Jewish Israeli man in Israel Defense Forces uniform opened fire on bus passengers in a Druze neighborhood of the Israeli Arab town of Shfaram Thursday afternoon. Four people and the gunman were killed and 12 wounded, two of them moderately.
Security forces said the shooting was apparently a Jewish terror attack and that the attacker was a newly religious man, an IDF deserter, from the West Bank settlement of Tapuah. Security forces said the gunman, Eran Tzuberi, 19, was a member of the outlawed right-wing extremist Kach movement. Tzuberi went AWOL a year ago.
A mob boarded the bus and attacked the shooter, but police officers removed the Lower Galilee residents from the bus and surrounded it to protect the attacker.
Dozens of people threw stones and bottles at the bus while the attacker was aboard. A security official said the shooter, who is apparently religious, was seriously hurt.
The shooting apparently took place in the wake of a dispute between the soldier and fellow passengers on Egged bus No. 165, which goes from Haifa to Shfaram.
Magen David Adom ambulances evacuated the wounded to Rambam Medical Center in Haifa.
MK Mohammed Barakeh (Hadash-Ta'al) classified the incident as a terror attack.
"We are witnessing attempts by extreme right-wing people, terrorists, who want to set the region ablaze and feel they have freedom of action in light of the behavior of the security, political and judicial establishment," he said.
When we start to see kollel students (that's what they call people who spend all day studying) shooting people, then I'll concede that your comment has merit.
Actually, the study that they engage in is extremely rigorous, and far from idleness.
Nevertheless, there are quite a few religious Israelis who do not work, but spend their time studying instead. I believe that this is a difficult social problem for Israel, and that they should combine their study with work. I don't believe that this sort of sociological group exists in Jewish communities anywhere else in the world. Even in Lakewood, NJ, the center of kollel activity in the US, those who study tend to do so for a few years, not for an entire lifetime.
But that's an issue for another thread, I think.
Excuse me? The police come out in numbers of 5 and 10 to one, beating the crap out of civilians at protests, taking in 13 and 14 year old girls and then throwing them in prison cells and you say the settlers are homicidal paradoid psychotics?
riiiiight.
Heeding the wishes of Sec'y of State Rice? Subverting Pres Bush?
I hope I missed the sarcasm falg..if I didn't, you just tied Rodney King in the stupid statement dept.
Did you bother to read those google links? Of course, as you well know (if you read them) they do not link to a wild-west atmosphere of homicidal shoot 'em up maniacs, as you are trying to imply.
The best thing about Free Republic is that it is very fact based. When someone tries to slander people or groups, or says things that are not supportable by the evidence -- as is the case with your claims -- they tend to get knocked down pretty fast.
And where do you get your information, Teplukin? I'd be interested, because you and ACLU simply are incorrect (hey, if you can present unsupported allegations as incontrovertible fact, I might as well do the same).
Do you think that it's possible that the total number of entries include multiple entries for the same event?
You "generalize" here all the time. "All religious Jews" = terrorist fanatics, your secular ex-Israeli friends said so.
That's like saying "all working mothers" = leave babies to die in hot cars.
I think there are two different types of Islamic terrorist, both of which have a striking parallel in the modern United States. Type #1 is the shiftless dope like the London bombers who have way too much time on their hands because "survival" takes far too little effort for them. If the criminal/thug element in our urban areas were prone to suicidal tendencies, these types of attacks would occur with boring regularity right here in the U.S.
Type #2 is an intelligent Muslim who could very easily be successful in today's world, but whose secular mindset has made him utterly bored with his worldly existence. He becomes a "revolutionary" of sorts simply because he feels a need to somehow make his life relevant in any way he can. Mohammed Atta was this kind of terrorist. His U.S. parallel is not a career criminal from Detroit, but a spoiled, snot-nosed sh!t from a well-to-do family. He's probably remarkably similar to Lori Berenson, that dip-sh!t from New York who joined the Shining Path revolution in Peru and who will probably spend the rest of her life in a Pruvian prison 15,000 feet up in the Andes.
Interesting, thanks.
You are welcome in advance.
188,000 Google entries for "former ACLU member kill."
You are a moron in retrospect.
AC, your comments make sense to me.
The problem is that Rodney was drawing a parallel between Jews who study Jewish law in Jewish religious schools and Muslims who study in Wahhabi-sponsored Muslim religious schools. That parallel is no more apt than a comparison with Monks who spend all day studying in their monasteries.
The issue is what they study, not the fact that they are studying. From what I have read (and, certainly, I am no expert on radical Islam) the teachings in the radical Madrassas are dramatically different than Jewish or Christian religious teachings. Spending all day studying, as far as I am concerned, is not idleness. It may be indoctrination, but it is not idleness. Instead, it can be highly disciplined and very hard work.
No, studying in kollel is not a crime comparable to what the terrorists in the training camps are doing. Studying in kollel is not a crime. Studying in kollel is good.
But somewhere in the last 50 years a sense has emerged in the kollel community that there is no obligation to work at a job in addition to studying. The talmudic admonitions not to teach Torah during work hours have become irrelevant for large subsets of the religious Jewish population in Israel, as those subsets of people simply refuse to work for a living.
A true story: I know a successful and internationally-prominent medical doctor who lectures at conferences worldwide when he is not saving lives in Jerusalem. His daughter, who is in her late teens, complained to him that because he has a job and is not studying in kollel, she will have a hard time finding an appropriate husband. This is just wrong.
>>Isreal's subsidizing the radicals who don't work, but rather sit around all day with their pals in the religious schools is going to come back to haunt them.
So yer talking about settlers who built their homes with their own hands and grow 30% of Israel's exports on the sand dunes. Yep, too much time on their hands.
The jewish soldier was a defector from about a year ago that lived in the settlements and was ultra orthodox. Get your facts straight, stop misconstruing them.
