Vanity: I'm moving to California
8/3/2005 | Me

Posted on 08/03/2005 12:24:40 PM PDT by DesignerChick

I'm considering getting transfered from my job and moving to San Deigo or Los Angeles (where my company has offices.)

Any Freepers want to give a Jersey girl some advice?

I've never been to Ca. but I've had it with Jersey. I know there are at least five Conservatives in Califorina (thats three more than NJ)- help me out people!

I lived in Simi for a time and that was ok, but prices were ridiculous there too. I moved to South Jordan, Utah. Very nice place.

my daughter went to the deaf and hard of hearing program from age 4 until 12...until we moved to PA in December, of all times. -

Since you are an architect, you might also want to try San Luis Obispo.

My husband's sis lives in SLO, so we visit there several times a year. It is a stunningly beautiful little town. Very charming vernacular architecture (each charming little house complete with a charming little garden), a beautiful though "boutique-y" downtown area, and beautiful hills in the distance. Wonderful climate. It is brimming with culture (if you don't mind it being at the college level) and educated people. Extremely liberal area, just like San Francisco. Well worth checking out, if you can stomach the endemic liberalism. (Of course, if you can't stomach the rampant liberalism here, why would you even consider moving to CA?) I disagree that it is cheaper, though. We are in Santa Rosa, near SF, and SLO costs seem to be higher than here. Also they have no shopping to speak of -- if you want to go to Home Depot or any other large store, you'll have to drive at least half an hour.

My dad and mom moved to California a few years ago. My dad became sick and died shortly after, much too young. He told us his only regret in life was not moving to California sooner.

Leave the snow and cold and don't look back. California is a great adventure. The ocean is beautiful and flowers bloom in January.

In PA now?? Don't you miss the water? Yes and no. I lived next to the water for 46 years and sometimes you just need a change

I've worked in Wall, Seaside (the boardwalk), and Point Pleasant Beach... That's saying alot to compare Redondo Beach to those places.

Talking about the boardwalk only.

I've lived in the Toms River/Brick area since '76 and love it. And it's an hour and a half max to whereever you want to go (Philly, NYC, Atlantic City, Wildwood, the Poconos, etc.) Red Bank...It's close to the beach and the City -- what's the problem, DC? Just a change of scenery?

I lived in Belmar from birth to 26 years, then lived in Ocean Grove for 2 years and then moved to Little Egg Harbor (Tuckerton exit 58)for 18 years. Too crowded for me. Now I live in Carbon County PA near Jim Thorpe. Out in the boonies for an amazing low price. I have almost 4 acres of yard. We are 1.5 hours from NYC, 1.25 hours from Phili and we are in the Poconos. PA has great gun laws. Great place to raise the kids. We would not allow our kids to ride their bikes in Little Egg, no problem here in pa. Little Egg today is a lot like what Wall and Brick or Jackson was when I was a kid, it was a lot cheaper than Belmar or Manasquan. Now it's all expensive. Belmar was a fantastic place to live back in the 60s and 70s.

Back in the late 60s, my dad worked in West Long Branch. We would pick him up from work if my mom needed the car. I remember being terrified at night driving up Rt. 35 between the Asbury Park Circle and Monmouth Mall Circle because the area was soo wooded we thought the boogy man was hiding in the woods. Can you imagine that area ever being wooded? Where the Kohls store in Brick is (Rt. 70 and Chambersbridge Rd) that was way back a Two Guys store. That area was considered the wilds of the jersey pinelands. No kidding, there was nothing there back then.

The scary thing after reading your post is remembering that SLO is the most conservative place that I have ever lived in.

I think it was the first place that I found people that voted Republican that were not my family.

Can you smoke in California?

Only crack...

Just kidding! I live here on the coast of South Orange County.
Freepmail any questions you have about this place called "California", and I'll try to answer all your questions.

I love it here, and wouldn't leave it even if I could live for free back east.

If your good looking,(I mean really hot for an east coast girl) I'll even introduce to some of my surfer friends, (I'm married)....

let me know.
