Vanity: I'm moving to California
8/3/2005 | Me

Posted on 08/03/2005 12:24:40 PM PDT by DesignerChick

I'm considering getting transfered from my job and moving to San Deigo or Los Angeles (where my company has offices.)

Any Freepers want to give a Jersey girl some advice?

I've never been to Ca. but I've had it with Jersey. I know there are at least five Conservatives in Califorina (thats three more than NJ)- help me out people!

NJ sucks - get out
(I lived there 13 years, so I'm allowed to say that!)

No question - San Diego over LA.

Climate - within 5-10 miles of the coast is the best weather in the US (except no T-storms, which I miss).
Closer to the coast is too humid - rusts my guns and motorcycle. Farther inland, temps go up about 1 degree per mile, but it's pretty dry (except for periods of monsoonal flow like we've been getting the last few weeks).

Geography - Ocean, mountains, desert all within a short drive. Lots of breathtaking scenery. I can be in the
middle of nowhere in 90 minutes. Thousands of square
miles of backcountry to explore.

Things to do: (too many to list them all)
World class zoo, Wild Animal Park, Sea World,
museums, lots of open space preserves, parks, etc.
Temecula wine country close by.
Almost any outdoor activity you care to indulge.
LA about 2 hours away for anything you can't
find in SD.

Taxes - too high

Traffic - bad, but probably not worse than many big cities,
certainly less than LA. Same idiotic drivers as everywhere else.

Cost of living - nuts (rent for now if you can)

Gun laws - moronic

People - too many vain ones, as someone else mentioned.
Never lived anywhere else where middle-income folks feel compelled to drive $60K cars. Too many liberals, but not as many as LA.

Good luck!

how much of a culture shock can it be? Los Angeles (city) is a third world country, it sligthly better in other areas. Los Angeles County is pretty big, which part.

Dye your hair blonde, lose 40 pounds (no matter what you weigh) and get one of those rainbow stickers for your car and you should be good to go.

Oh, and a boob job. Got to get the boob job...

Diss Fresno at your own risk!
Not only is it home to Victor Davis Hanson, but also to another ... errrr... a site that , well, I can't remember what; but it's important!

Well, let me help you - it's also home to the Central Valley MEPS (military enlistment processing station), or at least, it was back when I went in. Maybe that's why my memories of Fresno aren't all that favorable.

Ciggys cost around $4.86 per pack. You can't smoke in bars or restaurants. You also cannot smoke at the beach or on the pier. In Santa Monica you are not allowed to smoke within 20 feet of any window. No smoking at sporting events or parks.. so basically - no. lol..

Otherwise I'd recommend Northern California (Sacramento and above). More rural, but much more conservative.

Placer County IS conservative.

You've already been given plenty o'good advice and opinion ... I'll just say that I'm in SD county and am glad to be here ... used to live by the beach, now I call the mountains east of SD my home.

It's a fine place to be.

Good luck, Freeper, wherever you land.

California is NJ with better weather. Oh and a large residual effect of 20 year-old chemical impairment. Move to Arizona, Utah or, as I am told, Texas if you want a significant number of conservatives.

there are places in San Diego that could pass for Banana Republics...Stay away from them..Use google and dogpile for search engines and get every piece of info you can on safe places to stay and find directions for how to get to work....

I think this post was meant for DesignerChick. I'm perfectly happy remaining in Napa thank you! ;^)

Close.
But no cigar.

Keep digging...
