Interesting Info on Roberts

Posted on 07/25/2005 8:52:29 PM PDT by BQ91

I thought I would post this, info, cause it was from a meeting I attended 3 weeks ago with a friend who attends law school at the University of Texas. My good friend goes to church with me and is a what I call a moderate, who I am working towards becoming a true Conservative. Well he invited me to a evening gathering about 3 weeks ago given by some Profs, and Attorneys to talk about the Supream court, and the likely canidates and what that would mean for the court in the future. I was interested because I know this grow had a liberal tent to it, there were 4 speakers, and they disscussed about 12 canidates.

Four of the most conservative were Luttig, Jones, Alito and Brown, also Estrada. These 4 would all be extreamly right in the mold of the Right wants.

3 names that would be more moderate but somewhat conservative were Garza, Gonzales, Mcconnell.

When they talked about Roberts, two of them, did not know tow much, just thought he would be conservative more in the mold of a Requenist, and said he was a great attorney. Then The older Prof. Spoke up and said of all the Short list canidates Roberts If nominated could have the most impact of all, and for the Conservatives would be the best Choice. He then said something very interesting, showing his liberal colors, said if it was a Roberts nomination he feared the most! more than ALito, or Brown who he considered the most strict Conservatives.

Note he and the other Lady then spoke in agreement, both must have known him somewhat well. Roberts would be the one person, that would bring influnce to the Jurist that liberals should worry about the most. Kennedy! It was there contention, that Roberts was a exceptional Lawyer, and after the Arguemnets are done in Court the real work is coming up with a 5 vote majority. That Thomas is very interverted, strong in his opinions, does super influental. The scalia is very Brash and also not as influentual, very strong willed. Only Renquest is the conservative that can bulid a Bridge to The conservative middle.

Roberts would excell at this. Could be the man to bring Kennedy back more into the Conservative line of thinking, he is as brilient as Scallia, but nicer and more infullental. THen she said and he agrred that they thought, his think while not as Strict as Thomas, would be clearly more of a scallia than requenst. They Each saod though not much is known as a judge, he would be confirmed easily and would right there forming a strong conservative Block and a good chance he would pull Kennedy with him, much more to the Right. They did not think he would effect O'connor as much but might some. Now this was all speculated that the next opening would be for Cheif Justice.

In the End they Predicted that Bush would nominate Alito, or Luttig, FWIW. But the take on Roberts was he would be top 6 in conservative he could pick, would over time with more conservative Judges become more conservative, and would with his skills be the most enfulentional of any pick top move the other justices.

Thought I would share this, there were about 70 people to hear these profs thoughts on the judges that night, and few were conservative.

When I heard Bush had nominate Roberts, I thought wow, this could be interesting.

It's been speculated Bush could have him in mind for Chief Justice given his reputed ability to work well with others.

I do think the real story is Kennedy.

While O'Connor was on the Court he leaned on her for swing decisions, for support when he played back and forth. What will Kennedy do without her? Return to the fold? Try to move back and forth on his own? Is he independent enough to handle that pressure? I have my doubts. Or will he move completely into the Liberal camp.

Thank you for the information about the discussion. It was very illuminating and much appreciated.

However, for the ease of reading, a little spell checking would be appreciated also.

Interesting. It certainly confirms the position of Mark Levin.Sounds good.

I made up my mind to strongly support Roberts when he was announced, and since then in general the news has been good.

Thanks for the thought-provoking post. How they influence each other is something to consider, although not predictable.

I do too, because he does what he says he's going to do. He really meant it when he said he would select someone in the mold of Scalia.

Something completely lost on his critics.

Still.
