I hope it was from the mainstream of thinking that voted Bush in the second term.

I think it is abundantly clear that Judge Clements is no Janice Rogers Brown.

I'm doing some research into her now and would agree with this assessment.

Tempermentally she lacks the outspoken temperment of a Brown or even Scalia, which is what would make people comfortable. Yet Thomas is fairly private, temperment in itself means nothing.

I'm hesitant to remark on cases until I read more than a handful, which is all I've managed to find time for so far this night.

Specter is the chairman of the Judiciary Committee, either him or Frist would be the first to know in the Senate.

Grounded in the law once, perhaps. Although he was assist. council to the Warren Commission. However, the man is both too old (75) *and* in an ongoing battle with cancer. Not just any routine cancer either: He was diagnosed with advanced Hodgkin's lymphoma, a rare blood cancer. According to doctors, the disease had already spread from the lymph nodes, where it starts, to other organs in his body.

If there's one thing we can be sure of, it WILL NOT be Spector.

I can't find any opinions by Edith Clement Brown. that make me secure in her convictions. She was employed by "Big Oil" in the past, which you can bet will be the only opposition the libs really dredge up--she was a maritime attorney. WTF could she have done with Jones, Walker, Waechter, Poitevent, Carrere & Denegre that makes her controversial? They defend big shippers in maritime cases. Nada I can think of controversial there.

http://newsmeat.com/judiciary_political_donations/Edith_Brown_Clement.php

But she sure writes like a future nominee, all right. Nothing of substance beyond the law, no opinions, no nothing. Could be a Souter, might not be. But I don't like not being sure, and I don't trust it. As a district court judge, out of more than 1,300 opinions she authored, only 17 were reversed, partially reversed, vacated or even remanded. She said at her Senate hearing that Roe is 'settled.'

According to an August 29, 2000, New York Times article, Donald B. Ensenat, Bush’s Yale fraternity brother and roommate, recommended Clement for the district court slot.

People for the American Way don't like her, but that isn't the same thing as her being conservative, especially given the stuff they're bitching about, which seem highly procedural:

I just don't know what to think, and that is not what I'm looking for in a SCOTUS nomination from the WH.

Scalia is a natural, but President Bush isn't going to pass up the opportunity to name the first black Supreme Court Justice. That's just the way he is. On the one hand that could be very good for us if it is Justice Thomas. But then it could be a wild card.

Your 'nobody whined before' line don't cut the mustard, because it is asking people to explain why they didn't complain about her when nobody knew who the nominee was. I bet nobody complained about Chester P. Hoofarted, either, but that doesn't mean he's a good nominee for the SCOTUS.

If she's a conservative, we want it in writing. None of this 'trust us' crap. No Sununu 'references.' The GOP has pulled that before. Souters are no longer acceptable. I'll be all for her if you can show me something that demonstrates her street cred. Until then, I'm happy folks are popping the trial balloons. No more Souters.

I'm not trying to be critical, but there's not a lot of inspiring stuff in there.

I don't know 'bout that. She was nominated by Republicans, and she was a prosecutor with the U.S. Attorney's Office.

Reading the link (it took a while to find her statements) I thought she came across very respectable. The fact that Leahy hinted she was being bought by special interest groups inviting her to Judicial Conferences was enlightening. The fact that she said she would continue to attend, despite JOHN KERRY pushing legislation outlawing such participation by Federal Judges is even MORE encouraging.

When you realize that Edith Jones could be on the Supreme Court in place of Souter, it almost makes one want to demand that W. nominate Judge Jones to atone for his father's visiting Souter upon us all.

Specter use to be a democrat and nows he's a RINO. Just because he did something right in the Clarence Thomas confirmation doesn't mean he's a conservative. He's a liberal RINO who needs to be voted out of office.

He may be a liberal and a RINO but he's been a republican through his whole political career.
