The religious right? What is it with these folks? Just keeping things within the realm of the wacky 1960's is seen as being 'activities of the religious right'. I had a gal go off on me the other day for saying 'bless you' when her daughter sneezed, with her all upset about me forcing my religion down her throat.
The boogy man in this guy's mind is mainstream thought; as typical, he just doesn't get it.

You should know better; that's how the crusades started.

Actually, I don't say "bless you" when people sneeze just because I felt like I was buying into the silly superstition that gave rise to the tradition. I make an exception for my wife, just to be nice. Still, it doesn't hurt anybody, and I don't care if anyone does it around me.

Use "Gott Segnen Sie" (German) "Dieu Vous bénissent" (French) or "El Dios Le bendice" (Spanish) next time, and if a Socialist goes off on you again, tell them they're just "Wiccan Magic Words." That'll calm Mom right down, LOL!
