Skeptics on seat-belt laws dig their heels in for free choice
San Jose Mercury News ^ | July 16, 2005 | Gary Richards

… Having a license to drive means signing a contract to follow the rules of the road. Wearing your seat belt is one of them. If you die because you stubbornly don't buckle up, your death will affect family and friends. I doubt if they are OK with that…

The fact that the public pays for injuries to the unbelted is a problem with socialism, not liberty...and our government is socialist, more's the pity.

Good summary.

The government is very negligent in its most basic obligations -- maintaining a sound currency and borders, for example. Government fritters away its time and credibility, playing mother-in-law by enforcing seat-belt laws.

I would like all legislators in California to be required to wear a full-face motorcycle helmet when in session. The face shield should be reflective and in the down position, of course. Those soft heads need protection, and we in turn need protection from them.

Ie you cannot sue the other car (even if they are at fault)

In other words, if you're doing something that wouldn't have resulted in any injury to yourself and someone else does something that injures you, you shouldn't be allowed to sue? Oh wait, the real issue is whether you're doing something that's politically incorrect. Not wearing a seatbelt is politically incorrect, so we'll remove civil protections for those who don't wear seatbelts. However, someone can be doing something equally stupid that's politically correct, and all protections would apply.

Folks, the issue is control. If we are going to have any liberty left in this country, we have to stop trying to control other people, particularly over this kind of issue. Our country's problems are not the result of people not wearing seatbelts. Not wearing seatbelts may result in deaths and injuries, but it isn't even in the top 50 things that weaken our country. Get off your self-righteous high horses and just let this issue go.

Bill

Exactly, with freedom comes responsibility. You cannot have one without the other. You want the freedom to not wear a seat belt, then you get the responsiblity of paying for your medical bills on your own.

Thank you very much. It means a lot to Me when I am occasionally able to convey the concepts to which I swore allegiance to long ago, and devoted roughly a decade of My life to defend.

Insurance companies all make money on their investments. None of them make any money writing policy. It's pretty generally a cost passthrough situation.

I realize that, but every dollar they save on the cost side adds to their profitability. That's why we have all these laws that p!$$ on our rights, in the name of public safety.

Insurance companies would support seat belts if and only if they were able to reduce their costs (is what I am hearing from you).

Now, think about what you are saying ~ that if people wear seat belts highway travel "costs less", at least for the insurance companies.

So, why does it "cost less"?

Well, maybe there are fewer death benefits and injuries.

In the meantime, just remember that if you aren't using your seat belt, and have an accident, and your head or other body part smacks into my car and distracts me in the slightest I will sue your estate for everything you had leaving your widow and orphaned children destitute and living in cardboard boxes in an alleyway somewhere.

Sound fair?

I actually wrote that in rather a hurry, and can now see a couple of areas that could be better defined or a couple of other examples added, but I typed up My thoughts as quickly as I could when I was composing the original response, and as a result merely presented My rough thoughts as they occurred during the brief timespan necessary to physically type the letters and then post. Thanks again.

It's time to roll time back to the happy days of the 1950s where we can once again experience the thrill of launching ourselves out through the windshield of a Studebaker!

You make it sound like that's a bad thing.

I rather enjoy it, myself.

but wide availability of cars with seatbelts installed as standard equipment didn't occur till government regulations required them.

So you believe that the end justifies the means?

Thank you sir, you understood me!

It is not BS or political correctness, you want individual rights then you take the responsibility yourself!

"I think if you get in an accident an you are not wearing a seat belt, you waive all liability. Ie you cannot sue the other car (even if they are at fault) "

If you think you can force other people to cover for your damn negligent mistakes, you are nuts!

"I think if you get in an accident an you are not wearing a seat belt, you waive all liability. Ie you cannot sue the other car (even if they are at fault) you cannot sue the automaker, responsibility"

Learn what the word means before you use it.

I am not asking anyone to conver my mistakes, I pay to have insurance should I make a mistake.

If you make the mistake of not using your safety equipment, I shouldn't have to pay for it. Thats what I think. I see it equivalent to smokers suing the tobacco company, you want to smoke... fine, dont' ask me to pay your medicare when you have lung cancer. Likewise, you don't wear your seatbelt and are injured in a car accident, or not wearing a helmet on your motorcycle... too bad soo sad.

You can call me wrong, nuts, full of BS whatever... I don't know why everyong gets so excited because I have a thought that stimulates more discussion. I thought that was the point of this whole thing.

If electricity had been discovered just 10 years ago we would still not be able to use it, because it's just not "safe enough".

I'm not wearing a damn seatbelt. If you crash into me causing damage and harm, you're paying the damages. Got it?
