I was born and raised in Houston - still have a little accent. It is amazing to me that some people seem to associate stupidity with an accent :-)

Is this for real? Get over it.

Where I come from they still talk about the dutchmen saying: "Throw the cow over the fence some hay." I just laugh at them because I know they can't do it.

My family members seem to have the disadvantage of being born and living most of our lives in the South, in our case, Tennessee.

Wha... Wha... What? There is no greater advantage a man can have than being born and spending his life in the South. Disadvantage? It must be a typo.

... it seemed to conjure up that redneck image one might associate with the humor of Jeff Foxworthy and other Southern comedians. That image is of a culture of ignorant hillbillies (certainly due to inbreeding!), barefoot, living in a shack with no indoor plumbing (but certainly an outhouse in back), having a dog living under the front porch, and owning an overgrown lawn populated with broken-down, dilapidated automobiles. And, yes, we all chew tobacco and sit on the front porch swing playing the banjo. Everyone also flies a Confederate flag and reminisces about the War Between the States.

Don't that just sound like paradise? Although I can only assume that by "War Between the States" the author is referring to the War of Northern Aggression.

Truth be told, there are plenty of country club conservatives who condescend to southerners too. Makes me sick.

Here in Fla., everyone's from the North anyway.

LOL - I have a tattoo of the Battle Flag with the word "Tennessee" under it. People have asked "Are you from Tennessee?" I always have to answer them "Nope, I just couldn't spell Mississisississippi...."

People can think what they want. As President Bush has proved, it is sometimes an advantage to be 'misunderestimated'.

Have you ever noticed that people for NON-Southern states, especially BLUE ONES, don't tattoo their states names on themselves or bumper stickers and so on? Have you ever heard someone say, "YeeeHah! Massachusetts! ".......?....

Personally I find it humorous that when I open my mouth and speak the Yankees and liberals around me automatically assume that I am unlettered and "an ignorant backwards a$$ southern country F*(K". I'll let it ride. Being underestimated has always worked to my advantage.... Yes I will use every advantage I can. When they finally realize just how stupid their assumptions have been it is usually too late for them....

I have seen plenty of people who are arrogant about being New Yorkers and wear "I 'heart' NYC" shirts, if that counts.

I am from the great state of Kentucky, and I see your point. I wrote a long post here on FR right after Kerry lost the election explaining why he couldn't win a state south of the mason-dixon.

American by birth, southern by the grace of God.
