Anyone think there's anything to that splitting appearance?

It looks like that because the older convective blow up became removed from the center. Since then, we have seen new/intense convection wrap around the center again, as the older stuff rotates around. It's likely that most of that stuff further from the center will begin dying out over the next few hours.

My family and I rode out the north eye wall of Andrew here in Dade County. It's not truly known what the winds were, but a retired airline pilot on the block recorded over 200 mph before his anemometer blew off the roof. I think the thing was not accurate at those kinds of speeds, but my point is that being in your house while they are going on is scary and dangerous. No way do I want to be in another. But the truth is, in So Fl, with limited roads out, you either leave before you're sure the storm is coming, or you stay and ride it out.

I meant to add that I agree that the media hype for storms is nauseating.

I will add that IMO islanders and 3rd worlders fear hurricanes every bit as much as Americans. Probably more. Possibly though they do not get quite as excited about the smaller ones.

yeah...

we will see how the next 2 days go.

The stronger the Hurricane is, the more it will be affected by the upper air patterns....

Looks like storm chaff headed for Hispaniola.

Oh, I am well aware of people who delight in hurricanes! My family is full of them- it's more a ' low barometric pressure high' kinda thing. They don't get all giddy at the big ones, but stuff like Cindy last nite? Even I enjoyed sitting outside watching that!
No- I'm talking about the reprehensible behavior of CITY OFFICIALS and news and weather broadcasters! They dress up,you can practically see them salivating at the thought of 'the big one'! Dennis was just a tropical depression and Cindy was right on our doorstep, but Cindy didn't have time to become a massive killer newsmaker- so they focused on what would be Dennis!
I don't think I've seen the kind of excitement and glee from other weatherpeople that we see here. In Mobile- DURING IVAN- when the coast was being devastated, the people on-air were calm and professional. They didn't panic the residents.
Meanwhile- watching N.O. stations from Mobile was surreal! They had cameramen at the lake, they made it sound like N.O, not Mobile, was being hit!

We actually had a female, on air, telling people they would be corpses in the morning if they were still in the city- this during Georges! No escape- you were stupid and you were going to be dead! That's the kind of thing I'm talking about.
So, 5 days out, they have New Orleans doomed already!
And yes- that female meterologist is in her grinning glory.
Jim Cantore wants to be where the most death and destruction is. They're all so excited by the prospect of an 'event' that people's lives and property are just an afterthought.

Ooops -- put the directions in the wrong place.

You have to right click on the image square of the 2nd image, too.

I couldn't agree with you more. But I think it explains the increased interest in following these storms because any information advantage you can gain will help in making the decision what to do.

But if the decision is to leave, that decision can't be put off until it's convenient, because that's when everyone else will also leave. Leave at 2 a.m. instead of 7 hours later. You'll be somewhere safe while the rest of them are in gridlock.

My family is full of them- it's more a ' low barometric pressure high' kinda thing.

When my sister lived at Atlantic Beach, NC, she called me one day and asked ME if I thought she should evacuate; now I could HEAR a police car in the background, telling them to get OFF the island -- and still she can't decide.

I told her to go and get a map of NC and look at where SHE was and where the HURRICANE was (off Myrtle Beach) -- and I pointed out to her that her A$$ was hanging out there and it was going to come right through her front door and go out the deck door.

My father and I attributed it to lack of sense from a falling barometer!

Okay, normal people, let's take a vote! How many of you understood what was being conveyed by Post 66?

I'm not claiming to be normal, but I sure as heck can't understand those vortex reports until they're run through a decoder.

Dennis seems to have settled in on and around our porch.

Thus far, no bad weather. He looks pretty harmless, for someone who might hit Cat 3 by the weekend.

I know one guy in the Keys who waits until the storm is almost on him, the last few hours. When he hits the road, there's no one on it. 'Course if his car breaks down, he's kind of screwed.

I'm with you on that - and I don't live anywhere near the Gulf Cost - but we get the same thing up up here. As far as I'm concerned most of them should be fired....including city and state officials.
