Why did O'Conner resign?
I didn't understand your original post, either. Here is what you wrote:
He is "moderately" pro-life... id est he admits ABORTION!
I had to look up "id est" to see if it's a Latin term. I found out that it means "that is," but what does "that is he admits abortion" mean? I think your post is unclear.
Rush on live and hopping!
Ok, I re-write my opinion: Gonzo is NOT pro-life, because he would admit abortion in many cases. Anyway, it's not so uncommon to find people saying that we could be "moderately" pro-life, that is sometimes pro-abortion... For me there is only this alternative: pro-life or not, pro-abortion or against. That's all.
The problem is much bigger than RINOs.
Associate Justices and US Senators are both drawn from the same class.
The values of that class (the values of most of its members) are incompatible with ordered Liberty and a constitutional republic, since both require self-reliant and self-disciplined citizens.
The managerial elite wants neither.
How many US Senators want to be put on the spot by a reversal of Roe v. Wade?
I venture to guess that it's less than 30.
So it is with all of the "social issues". The class interests and class prejudices of Senators (especially Republicans) are at odds with those of the common people.
This being so, it is very much in the interest of a large bipartisan majority to have these "social issues" referred to a forum which is unreviewable and whose members are not subject to losing their jobs by failure to be reelected.
It will take a President with a very clear Constitutional vision and a large Senate majority to fix this problem.
NONE! Just give me a headsup. I work in Seattle and all that mass of exploding flesh and guts will splatter this entire office. I want to be in a waterproof suit with face gear on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Rush is right today: replacing one lawyer, a liberal Supreme Court justice, with another lawyer will change very little, even if the new judge is a real conservative.
I have to admit I never even thought of that idea. But what about the name. I had to look him up because I thought you were pulling my leg. Well, his record from the website looks pretty good. Is there somebody good in Idaho to replace him? I would hate to lose the next election because we appointed a weak candidate.
Ill spouse....and she's wanted to retire for the last 4 years.
Thanks for clarifying. I understand now what you are saying. I haven't followed this guy's positions, so I didn't know that he believes abortion is OK in certain situations. Do you happen to know when he thinks abortion is OK? Is it the fuzzy "health of the mother" situation or is he an "it's OK in cases of rape and incest" person? In my opinion, the first view is horrible because abortion will be permitted in all situations, but if he believes in abortion in cases of rape and incest, at least that reduces the number of abortions dramatically if it becomes law. I don't believe in abortion in cases of rape and incest, but it's certainly better than what we have now.
If it was ethinic preferences, he has Garza and Estrada to choose from.
I think the junior senator from Idaho pronounces his name "cray-poe." So that doesn't sound so bad. ;-)
Another senator Reid suggested as a justice is Lindsey Graham. Maybe it would be a good idea to get him out of the Senate!
Btw, does anyone know where I can find the roll call votes on Supreme Court confirmations? I would be interested in knowing which handful of senators had the good sense to vote NO on Souter, Ginsburg, and Breyer.
I do not always get to listen to him, but when I do, I find he usually is right. ;*)
He's not a conservative.
I just did some research on him, I agree we deserve a better Judge than him on the Supreme Court.
Do you want to know? All senators who voted against Souter were Democrats, including Kerry, EMK, Mikulski, Terry Sanford, Brock Adams, Bradley, Lautenberg, and Quentin Burdick of ND.
The American Conservative Union endorsed Souter. All Republican senators voted for him, including Helms and Nickles, then the two most conservative senators. Pete Wilson though was apparently absent from the vote.
"Time to go nukulear and be done with it."
Great line! Well stated.
Roger that. I'd like to see Janice Rogers Brown sent up.
any of the filibustered would probably be good. :D Estrada, Brown or the rest.
Geez - wha' happened - did Souter fool everyone, or was the homework not done? Or did the Left threaten to out him and he capitulated to their whims for life?
