(AP/Ipsos) Poll: Majority says war in Iraq a mistake
Bakersfield Californian ^ | 6/24/05 | AP

Posted on 06/24/2005 12:23:24 PM PDT by NormsRevenge

Just over half of Americans, 53 percent, now say the war in Iraq was a mistake - the highest percentage to say that in AP-Ipsos polling since December 2003, when two-thirds said the war in Iraq was the right thing to do.

The poll taken earlier this week also found that almost six in 10 disapprove of the Bush administration's conduct of the war, but about the same number say they would prefer keeping troops until the situation is stable instead of immediately withdrawing them from Iraq. Some other findings:

-Who most favors the war: Suburban men, Republicans.

-Who is most opposed: Those 65 and older, people living in urban areas, unmarried women, those who make less than $25,000 a year, Catholics and Democrats.

-War's conduct: Almost six in 10, 56 percent, said they don't approve of the way the Bush administration has conducted the war in Iraq, with 41 percent approving. Four of five Republicans, 79 percent, approved, while more than four of five Democrats, 84 percent disapprove.

-No hasty retreat: Given the choice of keeping troops in until the situation has stabilized or bringing troops home immediately, six in 10 said they want troops to stay and help stabilize Iraq. The percentage of people who want troops to come home immediately has increased to 37 percent, up from 28 percent in November.

The findings on the Iraq war come from a poll of 1,000 adults conducted June 20-22 for The Associated Press by Ipsos, an international polling firm. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points, larger for subgroups.

I think W has done a splendid job in assembling judges for consideration. He just doesn't have the strength of will to push them through. We're not talking Reagan here.

Oh, and I have a PhD, concentration on the WWII era. That makes me a credentialed armchair general. What did you learn in high school?

Tell that to Robert Bork.

Reagan had to deal with a Democratic congress, and had the strength of will and television charm to get his way most of the time.

Saint W has everything going for him...trouble is, no one rational believes a word he says.

Actually Reagan had a Republican Senate for 6 years, oh and was it Reagan's way to sign tax increases.

But go ahead wc9, dig yourself a deeper hole.

Reagan brought down the Soviet Union, and brought us out of Jimmy Carter's funk. For that, may he be forever blessed.

W finalized communist China's MFN status, and is presently making kissy-face with the head of communist Viet Nam. Tonight. Right up the highway from me.

You bots have such problems facing these facts. It hurts, I know.

The MSM is doing a great job at helping the terrorists defeat America at home.

That just never seems to make the "headlines" however.

One half of one half of the elegible electorate voted for him (including yours truly).

His poll numbers tell the story.

All the polls, by the way, agree.

I think the Downing Street memos put the kibash on the last few years of his presidency. We'll be able to tell better after ten years of perspective.

Just out of curiosity, why the pejorative "saint" in front of W? It totally diminishes your arguments. (not that that is difficult to do)

W claims that God speaks in his ear (specifically, He told him to invade Iraq). Historically, only saints and madmen take orders directly from the Almighty.

Name-calling again...and an unimaginative cliche, on top of it.

If you're going to insult, go for it! You're mad enough.

W claims that God speaks in his ear.

Can you show us an actual quote of him saying that? Or is it just your bigotry against people who pray that made you percieive him that way?

Or are you actually Ron Reagan Jr.?

I pray, too, Showme. But I don't parade it on television to get people to go along with what are obviously illegal actions. W does.

Religious people get all warm and fuzzy when the man is mentioned, just like libs do when Clinton is mentioned. It's no different.

I'm not going to bother digging up that quote, because it's late and an internet argument isn't worth the work.

So what war college did you graduate from? Please tell us what makes you an expert on warfare.

I heard the General rip the committee member that called the war a quagmire a new one. He also said that people like you were causing the men on the field to question if the people at home were behind them. You are doing nothing for the morale of the troops.

I've been here for years, Mr. whatever-the-heck-your screen-name-means.

I like to tease bots. It entertains me, like you do Mr. "Oh, we've found a (insert cliche here)! Now WE're buddies because, Dane, I don't have one in real life."

Ha. You guys are so funny.
