Hmmm ... cut back funding for "safe" alternative energies like solar and encourage spending more money on "dangerous" alternative energies like nuclear. Ridding ourselves of dependence on foreign oil is a *top* priority ... huge ... especially as China enters the competition for demand. But is this the "best" way to go about doing it? Three Mile Island? Chernobyl? I'd take a "solar disaster" over a "nuclear disaster" any day. We just need the next great evolutionary jump in solar technology.

Pebble bed reactors look like they might be very safe, as well as far less expensive to build (because they are scalable, and can be built from mass-produced parts). Here's a link to a Wired Magazine article about the Chinese program to build pebble bed reactors: http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/12.09/china.html

I like the idea of nuclear/desalination plants off the coasts.
You solve the problems of both electricity & water with one plant.

"It is time for this country to start building nuclear power plants again," he said to applause at the Calvert Cliffs plant.

I agree with him. Nuclear power is one method to reduce the reliance on Middle Eastern and OPEC oil.

Yes, build more nukes.

Also, change the law to let them reprocess spent fuel and reuse it.

Bush may or may not be right on this, but I believe government interference has probably played a part in the lack of nuclear plants in America.

The 103 nuclear power plants currently operating in America produce about 20 percent of the nation's electricity, Bush noted, without producing a single pound of air pollution or greenhouse gases.

Does the president mention anything about how the waste will be handled?

"about one cubic meter of waste per year is generated by a power plant. It needs to be kept away from people. After 10 years, the fission products are 1,000 times less radioactive, and after 500 years, the fission products will be less radioactive than the uranium ore they are originally derived from."

Or is that to be left to some other administration in the future. The land-fill implications in the future are huge whether you are a tree-hugger or not. It's great that nuclear saves us from "producing a single pound of air pollution or greenhouse gases" but the President is not providing full-disclosure on that topic.

I think they have more nuclear plants in france than we have in the entire country. I wonder what the percentage of power is produced by nuclear plants over there. The libs seem to think the french are just the thing, maybe this will shut them up.

Finally!

We're now about 35 years behind the "power curve" so to speak!

Build, build, build!

Buffett to invest more in energy. Investment guru looking to utilities, nuclear power

Billionaire investor Warren Buffett said his Berkshire Hathaway Inc. is willing to invest more money in the U.S. energy sector than the $10 billion to $15 billion he previously discussed, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday.

Buffett also said he sees more opportunities in the utilities industry, including nuclear power. Buffett said he is keeping an open mind about investing in a new generation of nuclear-power plants that would not create air pollution.

Looks like the time for more nuclear plants have come.

Agreed! We need to build more nuclear power plants!

I want one under the hood of my truck, too.

President Bush said gasoline prices will not drop when he signs a bill. But making the nation less dependent on foreign oil will make life better for future generations, he said.

I disagree.... When the US commits to an alternate form of energy for both electricity and transportation use, the price of oil will drop like a rock! And, I hope I live to see the day that the current Saudi prince has to drink his light sweet crude to stay alive........
