Betrayal (Are Republicans bidding farewell to pro-life supporters?)
National Catholic Register ^ | June 12-18, 2005

Are Republicans bidding farewell to pro-life supporters?

If they are, then many Catholics will be bidding farewell to the Republican Party.

More Catholics voted for Republicans in the last election than ever before — and they did it even despite Catholic voters’ opposition to the Iraq war. Abortion was the biggest reason why.

A Gallup Poll conducted just before the November elections found that 19% of likely voters say the abortion issue directs which candidates they are willing to support. A big majority of those voters chose President Bush — so much so that Gallup said it gave the president a 7% advantage among all voters, and the presidency.

In the Democratic Party’s platform, conventions and party leadership, any opposition to abortion is strictly forbidden. Pro-lifers have largely given up on them, and hoped the Republican Party’s official pro-life stance would make it a more natural home for them.

But the GOP is starting to look less like home.

When Democrats controlled the Senate, President Clinton’s judicial appointees sailed through despite their out-of-the-mainstream support for abortion. With little objection from the GOP, America got Supreme Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg and the federal judges who routinely overturn the pro-life measures states manage to enact.

But with Republicans in charge, Democrats wouldn’t allow the most reliably pro-life appointees to even get a vote — and Republicans were too afraid to give them the vote the constitution guarantees them. Baltimore Cardinal William Keeler wrote to U.S. senators Jan. 6, urging them to resist pressure to impose a pro-abortion litmus test on federal judicial nominees. Cardinal Keeler, chairman of the bishops’ Committee on Pro-Life Activities, objected to the judiciary’s virtual “Catholics need not apply” policy. To no avail.

America’s pro-life majority elected a Republican president and Republican Senate. Will these people be able to successfully seat a pro-life Supreme Court justice for us in return? That remains to be seen. But the GOP doesn’t seem as willing to fight as hard for pro-lifers as pro-lifers fought for them.

Look at what happened in the House.

The Republican-controlled body voted to spend money from American taxpayers’ paychecks to pay for unethical research that isn’t promising enough to attract private investors. Embryonic stem-cell research has been hyped as cure-all miracle research. But a review of the facts reveals it for what it is: the creation of human beings for the sake of science experiments that have so far produced only tumors in patients.

Adult stem-cell research, on the other hand, has produced amazing treatments for medical conditions. But no one is asking for taxpayer money to spend on it. Pharmaceutical companies are more than happy to invest in it themselves, because it works.

Formerly pro-life members of Congress are using pro-abortion arguments to explain their betrayal. They say these children are unwanted anyway, or that they aren’t fully human — even after being visited on Capitol Hill by “unwanted” embryos slated for death who were adopted, allowed to grow up, and now walk, talk, play and, some day, will vote.

If pro-lifers are starting to feel out of place in the Republican Party, the feeling might grow in 2008.

The party’s dream candidates for President — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, and California Governor Arnold Schwarzeneggar — are not pro-life.

Some party watchers say not to lose hope.

“I don’t think there is anything happening in the party per se on this issue. We are a pro-life party and will remain so,” Republican campaign strategist Bill Dal Col, who managed Steve Forbes’ 2000 presidential campaign, told the Washington Times.

The answer, says Steve Ertelt of Lifesite, is for pro-life advocates to work overtime to make sure the party knows what pro-lifers expect.

There is a long list of possible pro-life Republican presidential candidates, he said, including Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist; pro-life Senators Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania, Sam Brownback of Kansas, Chuck Hagel of Nebraska; and former Virginia Governor George Allen.

A pro-abortion Republican can’t win the next presidential election. The religious supporters that the GOP counts on won’t vote for the opponent, certainly — they simply won’t vote at all.

As Americans, our House and Senate leaders should support pro-life positions because if they vote the wrong way, they’ll end human beings’ lives.

As politicians, they should support pro-life positions because, if they vote the wrong way, they’ll end their political careers.

His voting record is not indicative of a pro-life President. It's about the same as Sen. Hutchinson of TX.

Allen voted to over-ride the first President Bush's veto of funding to Planned Parenthood to promote abortions. He is on the record supporting keeping 90%+ of all abortions legal. He supports federal funding of embryonic stem cell research. He is also a coward on the issue because he has obfuscated his stance on the issue - being against the 5000 partial birth abortions doesn't cut it when there are 2.5 million abortions a year. Nor does supporting parental notification - not parental permission even.

He's a decent Senator, but as a President, we can do better.

Not to defend the decision, but he did get the confirmation of three conservative judges in that process. He also willingly describes himself as pro-life. I don't support him for President, and he's not terribly strong on this issue, but I do think it's fair to call him pro-life.

but the problem is that the GOP leadership in the Senate has been unwilling to go to the mat on this issue.

The problem is that the GOP Senate leadership doesn't have the numbers to go to the mat. The Senate make-up is roughly 47-48 Republicans, 44 Democrats, 1 independent, and about7 or 8 RINOs.

Where were the pro-life voters in bible-belt states like Arkansas and Louisiana when those states elected 3 Democrat Senators? Apparently a lot of nominally pro-life voters in those states were more concerned about keeping their entitlement programs growing ever larger than they were about the millions of babies who will be murdered because we can't get pro-life judges confirmed.

If we really want to do something about abortion as much time, energy and money need to go to preventing abortion as trying to change legislation.

I think, originally, the pro-life movement thought changing legislation would be relatively easy and would be the end all - be all. So, of course, that is where they devoted their time and finances. The current pro-life movement know no other way and keep trying to same old strategies.

And by prevent abortion I mean more than standing outside clinics handing out religous tracts and yelling murderer to women entering.

I've never understood that strategy. You attract more flies with honey. But, some of them have a hard time with charm, that's for sure.

I am willing to see what happens with the judges and who they in fact pick to back against Hillary. Except for Condoleeza, if it's a pro-choicer/OR we don't get our judges, I will for the first time in my adult life, stay home for the presidential election. I may also leave the party.

Bush Signs Title X Funding Increase for 2005
Planned Parenthood's Abortion Funding Increased

http://www.covenantnews.com/lefemine050208.htm

President George W. Bush and the Republican-majority Congress Increased Title X to record $288.3 million in FY 2005 on 12/8/04

Title X is one of two major federal government funding sources for Planned Parenthood Federation of America, the nation's largest chain of abortion centers (murdering over 244,000 unborn human beings per year by surgical abortion alone).

Title X appropriation for FY 2005 (Oct. 2004 to Sept. 2005) was signed into law as part of H.R. 4818 (see bill at http://thomas.loc.gov), the mammoth appropriations bill which contained the huge outlays for the (unconstitutional) Department of Health and Human Services.

Republican-majority U.S. House approved H.R. 4818 by a vote of 344 to 51, on November 20, 2004 (Roll Call Number: 542). [Republicans 183 Yea, 27 Nay; Democrats 160 Yea, 24 Nay; 1 Independent Yea]

Republican-majority U.S. Senate approved H.R. 4818 by a vote of 65 to 30, on November 20, 2004 (Record Vote Number: 215) [Republicans 42 Yea, 6 Nay; Democrats 23 Yea, 23 Nay; 1 Independent Nay]

Republican President signed H.R. 4818 into law, authorizing the highest ever spending level for Title X in the history of the program, on December 8, 2004. It became Public Law No. 108-447.

This FY 2005 Bush administration Title X funding level of $288 million (an estimated $50-$60 million of which will be paid to Planned Parenthood Federation of America, for population control), exceeds by over $30 million, the highest Title X level during the Clinton administration, in FY 2001, of $254 million!

______________________________________________
Note:

The Title X program includes funding for contraceptive birth control; birth control that causes chemical abortions; and birth control for unmarried adolescents, even if their parents object to the federal government giving their children hormonal drugs and devices with which to fornicate.

The Title X program is also one of the principal federal government funding mechanisms for Planned Parenthood Federation of America (founded by Margaret Sanger), the nation's largest chain of child-murder-by-abortion centers.

You know you've posted an article which touches a nerve when all the kool-aid drinkers assemble in one place to denounce you.

I've stated on other threads and will do so again: The GOP needs us (pro-lifers) more than we need them. Sorry to those of you who don't like that or want to believe it, but it's true.

The ways to success for us (the pro-life movement) are:

1) Pummel the RINOs at the ballot box, especially those in Red States. Specifically, the careers of DeWine and Graham should be over in the next primary. McCain's career should be over in the '08 primaries. In turn, wholeheartedly support those Senators who support us.

2) Punish RINOs who won't support the party. If the Maine dimwits are so devoted to baby killing, let them vote that way at the risk of a 50 percent reduction in WAMs and other funding.

For those who say they are the best we can get in Maine, you're right.

But, instead of worrying about them, we should be fighting for a straight red state-blue state realignment. For every one we lose in places like Maine, we pick up seats in places like Nebraska, North Dakota, etc. Since 31 states voted for Bush in 2004, a straight realignment will result in a 62-38 GOP Senate, minus RINOs.

THAT is what will move conservative, pro-life policies, appointments and confirmations.

3) Finally, make clear to the GOP that we are not the equivalent of blacks to the 'Rats, and not passing our agenda will result in their political suicide. In short - be willing to walk away, and do so if they don't come through.

OO

Once we successfully do that, the practice of abortion will fade from existence.

While having the ring of reason, I think such a strategy will not meet our goal. As long as elective abortion is legal, irresponsible men and women will utilize it as a birth control of last resort. Protecting the right to life is one of the core responsibilities of government. It is not unreasonable to ask our government to protect these rights for babies.

As a Christian, I think we should follow the strategy of doing everything we can to change the mind of our nation, counseling at risk mothers and working with them. We should also work to see Roe v. Wade repealed and elective abortion ended state by state.

"Five bad Republicans can scuttle every pro-life judge, no matter how many good Republicans are in support support.

If just 5 people in your church could set policy for the entire church, would you blame the pastor and church as a whole for the actions of those 5 people?"

Yes. Because the priest or pastor could expel those five members once their actions became odious. If the priest chose not to do so, I would hold him and the church culpable for failing to use the authority to expel and discipline. Republicans are not free agents. They are members of a caucus, and subject to discipline by the caucus, including explusion. There is no need for the caucus to make an example out of them ALL either. Make an example out of one, to "encourage" the others, and there is less likelihood of rebellion next time.

He also appointed 6 pro-abortion judges to the federal bench in NJ's 3rd Circuit and signed the ban on Partial Birth Abortion bill into law while the very own bill allows PBA depending on the position of the navel.

And one of his great appointees denied a little girl from singing a song with the word "God" included. So much for appointing republican, pro-values judges.

I knew you people would come out of the woodwork.

He is no Christian. If he is, then why is he supporting the one world religion?

If he is, then why is he worshipping in mosques and declaring that Islam and Christianity worship the same god?

If he is a christian, then he should get the damned republicans together (seeing how the republicans hold he majority in the house, senate and hold the white house) and get rid of baby killing.

No I'm not clueless.....Ask George W about his skull & bones membership. Ask him about going to the Bohemian Grove. Ask him about his connections to the Moonies. Ask him about his support of Scientology.

And check this out...As Governor Bush's spokesperson, the talented Karen Hughes, put it in an official statement made to the Austin American-Statesman newspaper (Austin is the capitol city of the state of Texas), Mother Bush, Barbara the gray head, an Episcopalian who, incidentally, is a big believer in abortion, assured her son that people of all faiths, Hindu, Buddhist, Jew, Moslem, were going to go to heaven even if they rejected Jesus as Lord. Then, reinforcing Mama Bush's wide, umbrella-like religious spirit, Billy Graham told an inquiring Bush seeking the renowned evangelist's sage advice that he should never, but never preach to people that only the Christian religion was right or that Jesus was the only way. "Never play God...don't be harshly judgmental of others," Graham counseled Bush.

"Howbeit no man spake openly of Him for fear of the Jews." —John 7:13

This from Texxe Marrs.

Or how about this......George Bush’s home church in Texas is Highland Park United Methodist Church in Dallas.38 This church welcomes impenitent homosexuals as members. President Bush said he reads the Bible daily, but he confessed to the New York Times, “I don’t necessarily believe every single word is literally true.” About the evolution-creation debate, he said, “The verdict is still out on how God created the earth. I don’t use the Bible as necessarily a way to predict the findings of science.” In other words, Darwinism may be true according to President Bush. When the Bible and a scientific consensus are at odds, whom do you think that George Bush believes? From DR. Patrick Johnson

I'm clueless?

If George Bush Is Christian, then I'm Rondald Reagan.

So, you believe that the more pro-abortion politicians are in power, the more the pro-life cause is advanced. To believe such a thing, one has to be extraordinarily naive. Your hysterical rants don't change the fact that there is a political reality that must be dealt with.

Moreover, people in Louisiana cannot legally vote in Pennsylvania elections, making a number of your arguments about wanting to vote for Toomey in the election very bizarre to say the least.

Typical FREEPER reply."You Are Nuts...You need tinfoil.YADA YADA YADA

MY George Bush would never do anything that you say he does. He's a Christian....he's the greatest president ever....he's so great that he's ....yada yada yada....

I've been on the radio for several years now and I've interviewed several people who know much more than you about 9/11.

There were several witnesses (former military)who smelled cordite just after the attack on the Pentagon. Cordite for those who do not know, is an explosive powder that is used in demolition devices and in some missiles.

There were reports made by CNN reporter Jamie Macintire just after the Pentagon hit that there is no evidence of an aircraft hit at the pentagon. NO wing structure no large pieces of aircraft anywhere.

There are many people who do not buy the story put out about 911.

We were told that government was not ever expecting an attack using aircraft.....George Bush and Condolisa Rice both stated this several times.

And yet we are told that FEMA was conducting a drill that very day of 9/11/01 using the scenario of aircraft slamming into of all things the twin trade towers and the pentagon.

They use that excuse to explain away the non activity of our air defense system for almost 2 hours with 4 planes that were so far off course in the most watched and defended airspace in the world. And you people think this is OK that our government tells us one thing and then the exact opposite the next and yet you still believe what they are telling you. Amazing.

George Bush is still no Christian.
