MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Four of the 14 Cubans intercepted at sea aboard a vintage taxi converted into a boat will be allowed to stay in the United States because they have valid immigration documents, but the others will be sent back to Cuba, U.S. officials said Thursday.

Rafael Diaz Rey, the mechanic who built the blue, 1948 Mercury taxi-boat, and his wife and their two children appear to have legitimate documents that would permit them to stay in this country, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Miami.

Just because their creative doesn't give them the right to come into our country illegally. You hear that word, ILLEGALLY. Their criminals. They will suck your taxes for education, health care and other benefits.

Petronski, I am suprised at you. How did your ancestors get into this country? Legally or illegally?

John Robertson, how did your ancestors get into this country? Legally or illegally?

Legally.

What's the first thing I said on this thread? "There should be an ingenuity exception."

If there IS such an exception, then by definition, they would be admitted under the law, and it would not be illegal.

They did. They made it to Mexico and walked across the border in Texas. They're Cubans who made it to land - even though it wasn't Florida - so they get to stay.

Exceptions should be made for people from communist countries particularly Cuba. I have always believed that and always will.

Otherwise, send the illegals home. I'd send some legals (who are not citizens) home as well. They all suck up our money for health care, welfare and education among other things. It's ridiculous.

On a case by case basis, in my opinion. Otherwise, we'll get another few thousand Cuban (or Venezuelan) felons.

The other thing is that as far as I am aware, there is no "legal" way to immigrate from Cuba. Even if the US grants you a visa, Castro won't let you leave.

It is sad, that you can't tell the difference between illegal aliens and LEGAL REFUGEES from communist Cuba, for whom a law was created, "The Cuban Adjustment Act".

Yes and this is the same guy that built the "pickup boat" last year. Pure determination.

There was a clever truck boat a while back, and the US Customs ( or some other branch of the US government) in their infinite wisdom SANK it, to discourage people from imitating them -- well, apparently these guys in the taxi did the same thing.

Of course, the fault for that act of idiocy lies at the top of the chain of command, so to speak.

I believe there is a lottery. But there isn't normal emigration, like from the countries many of our ancestors came from, you are right.

Since when is following the law, make people "illegal criminals".

READ THE ARTICLE AND GET INFORMED

"will be allowed to stay in the United States because they have valid immigration documents

An attorney for Democracy Movement, a Cuban exile group in Miami, said Diaz and his family last year won the documents in an annual lottery in Cuba for legal travel to the United States. But the communist government of President Fidel Castro refused to let the family leave, said attorney Wilfredo Allen."

Yes, should Castro decide to pull that one again. What I originally said, with the exception of Cuba's felons. = )

"Under U.S. policy, the car-boats are sunk at sea after being intercepted."

They should be exhibited, to show what lengths people will go to, to escape communism.
