MIAMI, Florida (AP) -- Four of the 14 Cubans intercepted at sea aboard a vintage taxi converted into a boat will be allowed to stay in the United States because they have valid immigration documents, but the others will be sent back to Cuba, U.S. officials said Thursday.

Rafael Diaz Rey, the mechanic who built the blue, 1948 Mercury taxi-boat, and his wife and their two children appear to have legitimate documents that would permit them to stay in this country, according to the U.S. attorney's office in Miami.

The four that will be allowed to stay are probably Castro agents.

There ought to be an ingenuity exception. Anyone who wants to be an American bad enough to build a craft like that is someone we want to have.

How much you want to bet they move to NYC and become taxi drivers? Actually, I give these folks a ton of credit both for guts and ingenuity. I trade one of them for 1,000 Dumbocrats any day.

Wait. I thought the way it worked was that they turn themselves in and go before a judge for a hearing date and then the border patrol puts them on a bus to anywhere in the country they want to go and that they aren't heard from again.

As I said on another thread, if these Cubans had just claimed to be Mexicans wanting to work jobs Americans won't do, they'd have been welcomed with open arms. Shame all they were doing was fleeing an oppressive, murderous dictator. Sigh...

Indeed.

And I get only half credit...not only did they build that craft, but they sailed her!

That was exactly my thought.

Not to mention, their vintage taxi, once desalinated, would no doubt have some collector value.

I have a tremendous amount of respect for these people and think they will become great Americans. Amazing what they can do with little or nothing to work with.

Hear hear! Didn't the guys that built the Chevy Boat and the Pickup Boat finally make it to dry feet status? I think maybe they did.

"America needs people like them.."

Bull puckey. What part of the words "illegal aliens" don't you understand?

Send all illegals home and close the borders.

Your paying for people to do that. But your not getting any results. Ok, take more out of your paycheck to pay for them.

Damn straight, but they ain't Mexicans!
They should have headed Northwest, and snuck across the border the approved way.
None of this makes a damned bit of sense, has anyone else noticed, or is it just me?

Necessity might be the mother of invention, but tyranny is the mother of great escapes.

Isn't it also amazing how that stupid idiot dictator Fidel and his goons have managed to drive a lot of resourceful, ingenious Cubans to escape from the island, while the whole place is falling down around him? Well, I guess he and the Cuban nomenklatura live well enough, and that's all that matters, right?

The Coast Guard sank it as a hazard to navigation.

Wow. By that narrow reckoning, East Germans who escaped the Iron Curtain in homemade hot-air balloons, or by running no-mans-land on foot, were criminals who should have been sent back.
