Retailers experimenting with biometric payments

Three or four days a week, Darren Hiers gets lunch at a Sterling convenience store near the car dealership where he works.

He grabs a chicken sandwich and a soda and heads to the checkout counter, where a little gadget scans his index finger and instantly deducts the money from his checking account

....... The finger scan used at the shop in Sterling, known as a biometric payment system and made by a Herndon firm, is just starting to be installed at convenience stores and supermarket chains around the country, another step in a revolution that is turning the human body into the ultimate identification card.

These systems are already being installed at airports and border entry points all over the world. Following close behind is the biometric evasion technology.

Should be interesting. Usually the way this happens with technologies that a lot of people do not want is they pay off the politicians to mandate it so they can make money. Here in Washington they keep mandating more sizes of child seats to force parents to buy about 4 of them during the child's adolescence.

Such is the state of America.

"Hmm" indeed! Forget about the good old days when a mugger would shove a gun in your face and demand your wallet.

In this glorious future, you can look forward to having a brick bashed into your head and your finger removed with a bolt cutter.

I've heard that these systems can be easily defeated and manipulated with a little ingenuity and know-how. Basically you can take anyone's fingerprint lift and turn it into a working copy for the scanners. I'll have to search for the link.

Why is this any better than using an ATM card to pay? It takes a finger print and a code(10 digit) to access with biometric and it takes a card and a code with an ATM card at the same places. Everyone has an ATM reader now so what the H**l is the dig deal about this?

Would you give me a ping if you should find it?

Don't know about everyone else, but this 'fingerprinting' crap REALLY bugs me.

Where I come from, only *criminals* are fingerprinted.

Depending on your ATM card and how the register is implemented it might not take a code. Most of your ATM cards can be used for credit or debit payment, the two primary differences between the two is credit goes through a credit line that takes a few more hours to come out of your account and credit usually (depending on how various people implemented various things) doesn't require your ATM code because it's not technically working as an ATM card.

Don't think of it as competing with your card, think of it as competing with cash. People that don't like cards for various reasons might like this. Just another step on the way to eliminating hard currency, don't worry though it's still gonna be a few decades.

Cash, charge or fingerprint?

None of the above.

Check, just to piss off you people behind me who seem to think it's not legal tender.

Everyone has an ATM reader now so what the H**l is the dig deal about this?

Because an ATM card isn't permanently affixed to our bodies?

Because (as another poster pointed out) are criminals now going to be cutting off fingers?

Because you could lift a fingerprint from ANY smooth surface like a drinking glass or a car door?

Because we are SUPPOSED to be a *FREE* people?

You don't see anything wrong with this?

I am pretty sure that I clerk would notice you using a bloody thumb for payment.

Finger bits are for chili, everyone knows that.

I think it has to b a live, warm, attached, finger+print (according to the movies).

Chili fingers are a bit different, as we all know. LOL!

(PS, sorry - couldn't resist.)
