The government made a mistake in annexing all of east Jerusalem following the Six Day War, Vice Prime Minister Shimon Peres said at the Labor Party's Jerusalem Day celebration at the capital's Gerard Behar Center on Sunday.
"Whoever thinks that 240,000 Arabs from East Jerusalem could be annexed while Jerusalem stays a Jewish capital is as mistaken as those who say the city can be divided with fences and walls," Peres said.
"If there isn't peace in Jerusalem, there won't be peace in the country, and if we don't leave the Gaza Strip, there won't be peace in Jerusalem," he said.
Peres said Labor made a mistake in allowing the party to be left with no seats on the Jerusalem City Council and vowed to not let it happen again.
National Infrastructures Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliezer, who like Peres is seeking the party's leadership, said that Labor should already decide now on its next candidate for mayor of Jerusalem.
Meanwhile, over 10,000 people took part in the main Jerusalem Day Parade which took place Sunday evening in downtown Jerusalem. Among those in attendance were President Moshe Katsav, Knesset Speaker Reuven Rivlin, Ministers Shaul Mofaz, Limor Livnat and Avraham Hirschzon and Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski.
Earlier, the Agricultural Settlement Parade marched through downtown Jerusalem Sunday as part of the Jerusalem Municipality's celebrations on the eve of Jerusalem Day.
Local councils, artists, soldiers, dancers and other performers marched through the city's busiest streets during the evening hours. Israel's President Moshe Katsav, Jerusalem Mayor Uri Lupolianski, Members of Knesset and other VIP's came to watch.
On Jerusalem Day, which takes place on Monday, the Flag Parade will leave Sacher Park at 3:30 p.m. and head to the Western Wall.
English tours of the municipality will be held at 10 a.m. and noon, and will leave from the palm trees in Kikar Safra.
WARNING: This is a high volume ping list
Praying for the peace of Jerusalem.
What makes these idiots believe that appeasement will work??? Like the Mohammedan world will suddenly love the Jews once they leave Gaza??
Zechariah 12
3) And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people: all that burden themselves with it shall be cut in pieces, though all the people of the earth be gathered together against it.
9) And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
The only way there will be peace from the Arabs, is when the last Israeli is thrown into the ocean.
Peres is like Bill Clinton with out the mistresses,
or the glib tongue.
Sometimes I think that Mr. & Mrs. Peres not practicing birth control 80 years ago was a mistake.
The only way there will be peace with the Arab Mohammedans, is when everyone converts to (their brand of) Mohammedanism.
Peres is an example of just how f###ed up the Israeli government is.
Imagine if every Republican administration since 1980 was required to retain Jimmy Carter in a significant position of power.
Absolutely correct.
Peace will come to Jeruselem when it is ALL the Capital
of Israel.
Peres, always the one to open his big mouth when least needed.
I seem to remember Barak floating the idea that the return of E. Jerusalem was on the table. Hence his blow out loss in the elections.
IMHO, world Jewry is united in their belief that Jerusalem belongs to Israel and will never be returned tothe Arabs. Prior to '67, Jews couldn't even get to the Western Wall to pray. Houses were built up against the Wall, with garbage thrown in the space between the houses and the Wall.
Today every Jew that visits Israel, be they Orthodox, Conservative or Reform, visits the Western Wall, in E. Jerusalem.
Perez is a self-hating Jew that is deluded in his belief that there is even a remote possibility of a durable peace with the Arabs. He is one of the greatest threats that Israel still faces and proves it with idiotic pronouncements such as this.
Peres is an @$$ if there are to many arabs throw them out, learn from poland and chzecholvakia
I surely hope that the people of Israel understand the false assumptions made here. Giving up Gaza will not bring peace to Jerusalem.
It is more likely to do just the opposite given the perverse attitude of the occupiers.
May the God of Abraham, Issac and Jacob give peace to Jerusalem.
It is Peres(more like "Peretz", meaning vulture)who is the mistake.
In his old age, Peres has become the palesimians' rent boy..
