Syrian firefight leaves one dead
Monday, July 4, 2005; Posted: 8:31 p.m. EDT (00:31 GMT)
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/07/04/syria.clash/index.html
(CNN) -- Syrian security forces battled suspected terrorists early
Monday outside of Damascus, resulting in the arrest of two members of a
militant group, but leaving one member of the security force dead, Syria's
official news agency (SANA) reported.
Four Syrian security forces members were also wounded.
The gunbattle took place in an area called Qasyoun Mountain, near the
Syrian capital.
Taken into custody by police were Sharif Al Smadi -- said to be a
Jordanian -- and Mohammed Al Smadi, also known as Mohammed Salam.
SANA reported that a senior Syrian Information Ministry official said
the men had worked as security guards for former Iraqi leader Saddam
Hussein.
The firefight comes a day after two Syrian border patrol guards and an
armed fundamentalist were killed in a clash on the Syrian-Lebanese
border, SANA reported.
The agency said the Arab fundamentalist opened fire at the border,
killing the two guards, before he was killed by other border personnel.
Later, 34 other suspects -- all non-Syrian -- were arrested in a
follow-up operation, SANA reported.
Syria has been under pressure from the United States to crackdown on
so-called foreign fighters said to be using the country to cross into
Iraq.

POISON IVY RASH
Poison ivy - Don't scratch! Makes it spread, not only where you
scratch first, but wherever else you scratch. Aloe Vera gel (with
the lotions at Wal-Mart) applied to affected areas draws out the
poison and dries it up. If Aloe is not available, apply Vick's Vapor
Rub to make it quit itching [like you do for Chicken Pox] reapply
as needed. And stay away from the fan if you use the vapor rub.
Hope this helps someone. ~Ann

Bahrain's Top Diplomat Shot in Baghdad
By SINAN SALAHEDDIN
Associated Press Writer
http://ap.washingtontimes.com/dynamic/stories/I/IRAQ?SITE=DCTMS&SECTION=HOME
BAGHDAD, Iraq (AP) -- Bahrain's top envoy to Iraq was wounded Tuesday
in the second attack against an Arab diplomat here in a week. A major
Sunni Arab group called on Sunnis to take part in future elections,
action that could diminish the insurgency.
Elsewhere, gunmen ambushed a minibus taking seven Baghdad airport
employees to work Tuesday, killing four women and wounding three men, police
and hospital official said. A roadside bomb targeted a U.S. security
convoy Tuesday near the Iranian Embassy, causing no U.S. casualties but
injuring one Iraqi, officials said.
The Bahraini diplomat, Hassan Malallah al-Ansari, was shot on his way
to work in western Baghdad, said Dr. Muhanad Jawad of Yarmouk Hospital.
Al-Ansari was treated for a shoulder wound and was released, witnesses
said.
"There was an attempt to kidnap him by gunmen when he was on his way
from his house to the Bahrain mission in Baghdad," Bahrain Foreign
Ministry Undersecretary Yousef Mahmoud said in a report carried by the
official Bahrain News Agency.
The incident occurred three days after gunmen kidnapped Egypt's top
envoy to Iraq, Ihad al-Sherif, and both attacks appeared to signal an
insurgent campaign to discourage Arab countries from bolstering diplomatic
ties to the U.S.-backed Iraqi government.
"The aim is clear, just to create a state of fear," Iraqi government
spokesman Laith Kuba said. Al-Sherif's kidnapping "was an attempt to ...
scare the other diplomatic missions so that they won't expand their
presence in Iraq."

Bin Laden 'may be in Afghan south'
From correspondents in Islamabad, Pakistan
July 05, 2005
AL-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden and his close allies might be hiding in southern Afghanistan, which has seen a sharp rise in militant violence in recent weeks, a Pakistani minister said in remarks published today.
The whereabouts of bin Laden, architect of the September 11 attacks, and top militants such as his deputy, Ayman al-Zawahri, and Taliban leader Mullah Mohammad Omar, are not known but they are suspected of hiding along the rugged Afghan-Pakistani border.
Although both close US allies, tension has risen between Afghanistan and Pakistan over Afghan and US military accusations that militants launch attacks into Afghanistan from the safety of Pakistan.
Afghan and US officials there also say bin Laden is not in Afghanistan, suggesting he must be in Pakistan. Pakistani officials insist he is not in their country.
Pakistani Interior Minister Aftab Ahmed Khan Sherpao again ruled out the possibility that bin Laden was in Pakistan and said the fugitive leader and his allies might be hiding in Afghanistan's restive south.
"The possibility of Mullah Omar, Osama bin Laden and his close aide, Ayman al-Zawahri, hiding in that area cannot be ruled out," Mr Sherpao told the Pakistani state-run Associated Press of Pakistan.
Southern parts of Afghanistan were not under effective control of the Afghan government, he said.
The former US ambassador to Afghanistan, Zalmay Khalilzad, told a news conference in Kabul last month he did not believe bin Laden or Omar were in Afghanistan, though he did not say where he thought they were.
Shortly afterwards, CIA Director Porter Goss said he had an excellent idea where bin Laden was hiding but he would not be brought to justice until weak links in counter-terrorism efforts were strengthened.
Southern Afghanistan was a powerbase for the Taliban until they were ousted in a US-led offensive in late 2001. Since then, the region has been a hotbed of Taliban activity.
Hundreds of people, most of them militants but including government and US troops and civilians, have been killed in the south and east of Afghanistan since a new wave of violence began in March.

Well folks, work reality has really set in again so I'll be primarly in lurk mode for the next month or so. I've got 5 days of work to cram into 4 days, and it just gets better from there. Please keep pinging me on key articles, it'll help me keep up. Hopefully by the end of August things will again stabilize and I'll be able to participate more.
Thanks.
Good morning, bored at work. I agree.
The car was based on some ancient British model and never changed over the years. It was rugged and did not have any features that cars in USA have. The joke went around that with a few modifications, it would be very effective in the farm sector.
In the late 1990s, the Indian economy opened up and you see other cars on Indian roads.
The avalanche is likely debris falling from the growing dome within the crater (the 'Whaleback' - visible in the central portion of the crater). The dome is very steep sided and is growing 6-10 feet per day. This causes the sides to become unstable and occasional rock avalanches will occur.
Just an FYI to ya'll - I'm seeing indications that there may be a new Al-Zarqawi tape/audio coming out soon.
Please keep your eyes out for this, as I have some work stuff to get done, so I'll be on and off the 'puter all day.
