Garza says, "They're getting frustrated because we're out there. We're encountering them more times."

Or maybe they're getting more aggressive because success breeds confidence.

All it would take is cracking down on the business owners who hire them to get most of them to self-deport. If they have no job, then they have no reason to be here. At least that would be the case for most of them.

Texas authorities requested compensation from the federal government in for the incarceration expenses for about 3,866,720 days of detention for illegal aliens in state and local jails and prisons. The cost of the detention amounted to $152,751,098. Under the federal State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP), Texas received $58,941,600 in compensation, leaving $93,809,498 in uncompensated costs to be borne by Texas taxpayers. The SCAAP program began in 1994 and compensates the states and local jurisdictions only for incarceration of "undocumented,"illegal, aliens who are serving time for a felony conviction or at least two misdemeanors.SCAAP data indicate that Texas's illegal alien inmate population has increased by 28 percent from the 3,866,710 inmate days in 1999 to 4,958,995 inmate days in 2002.

This problem would be solved VERY EASILY by simply reducing the questions for any immigrant coming across the border to two. If they can VERIFY
1)Do you have a job waiting for you?
2)Do you have a clean criminal record (no criminal convictions)?
If the answer is yes to both of these and verifiably so. LET THEM IN.

A corrollary to this is to adopt something like McCain-Kennedy or Bush's proposal to allow illegals whose ONLY illegal activity is related to immigration law.

We should, in essence, say "We made a bad mistake by refusing to legally allow in the people on whom we depend to fill entry level labor positions here. It has been hypocritical and wrong and we will grant legal status to anyone whose only legal transgressions have been violation of immigration laws."

We could then CONTROL our border without insulting our neighbors.

This will never fly with a large number of the anti-immigrants here on FR, as the real issue is NOT the border, but rather the influx of hispanics themselves. The border stuff is a pretext. If it were not, there would be support for an amnesty program, as it is the most simple and reasonable solution to what has become a real mess. Instead, half the folks who populate the immigration threads stand up and act like violating the border was tantamount to raping the first lady, rather than people seeking a better life for themselves. My contempt for this crowd grows daily. They are hypocritical statists and racists, making the most hateful and vicious statements about Latinos that one can imagine. They DESERVE to be baited, insulted and abused.

Is this what it's about? Not just the cheap labor but fixing SS and Medicare? I found this old article among my saved mail, and did not keep the link at the time I saved it. It's from 2 years ago:

February 27, 2003
Greenspan: Aging Populace a Challenge
By REUTERS

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan said on Thursday an aging U.S. population presents ``daunting challenges'' for the future that potentially imperil the country's Social Security safety net.

``The changes projected for the United States are not so severe as those projected for Europe and Japan, but nonetheless present daunting challenges,'' Greenspan said in testimony prepared for the Senate's special committee on aging.

He said there would be ``significant effects'' from a rapidly aging population on government finances. ``In particular, it makes our Social Security and Medicare programs unsustainable in the long run, short of a major increase in immigration rates, a dramatic acceleration in productivity growth well beyond historical experience, a significant increase in the age of eligibility for benefits or the use of general revenues to fund benefits,'' the Fed chief said.

He also said there was a risk that flows of capital to the United States could be affected in future as more swiftly aging populations in Europe and Japan trim the investments they hold in U.S. assets.

Greenspan told lawmakers that the sooner the United States faces up to the need to adjust for an aging population, the better. ``If we delay, the adjustments could be abrupt and painful,'' he said.

Dear President Bush,

Perhaps a search party would help....to find your testicles....since you seem to have mis-placed them.

AMERICANS (ya know...the ones you swore to protect) are being hurt...and killed by ILLEGAL (I'll send you my copy of the dictionary in case you have forgotten the meaning of that one single word) people crossing over from Mexico....some of whom are being reported as Islamic Terrorists...(ya know...the ones we are fighting in Afghanistan and Iraq).

I don't want to be this blunt.....but nothing else seems to work.

Protect America....it's your JOB.

You know what? I don't feel sorry for the BP at all! They can defend their sorry a$$es anytime; just mow the dastards down! But of course not, take the easy way out; complain and ride in chicken cages.

'nuff said!

The Border Patrol agents are in a terrible spot. On one site they've got the threat of the illegals becoming more violent, on the other side they've got Rep. Jim Kolbe threatening them for enforcing border security with permanent checkpoints while he want them shut down. Their management is too busy playing politics to support the actual enforcement of border security. I don't know how the agents can put up with this crap! This isn't right. These are the guys on the front lines trying to protect our borders from invasion. And we let them get treated like this!!?

What indeed!  We are offered only short term, knee jerk, feel good solutions.  The corruption that has gripped Mexico for 500 years has made great headway into our society.  Building a great wall along the border will not close this chapter of history.  Stationing of our armed forces along the border will have no better success.  Sending all the illegal aliens back will not correct the situation.  All these solutions place great burdens of finances and resources upon the American citizens for generations to come.  And all the while, our soft underbelly is not protected from the grave corruption, but growing more vulnerable.

In our war on terrorism, our two most susceptible target cities for a terrorist nuclear device are outside our jurisdiction, but would wreck extreme havoc on many US cities, and major military installations. Those cities are Tijuana and Juarez, Mexico. No border wall can protect the vast areas that would be affected. Major US cities affected would be San Diego, Phoenix, Tuscan, El Paso, San Antonio, Houston, and depending on the seasonal wind currents, possibly many more Gulf cities.

We need a solution that will end the pilgrimage of illegal aliens across the border, ends the tyranny of Mexican corruption that makes our southern border cities so vulnerable, and offers a real long term solution.  The pilgrimage will stop, and our security will be strengthened only when these people have within Mexico what they seek here.

As much as I would like to round up all of the 10M or so illegal immigrants in this country and send them back to their country of origin. Some realpolitik is in order.

Immigrants in Mexico send some $30B US back home every year. This is Mexico’s second greatest source of cash(foreign exchange). Link: http://scyllacharybdis.blogspot.com/2005/05/even-banco-mexico-counts-20-billion.html

We must realize that an election is coming soon in Mexico and with Mexico’s inefficient economy unable to provide enough good jobs for it’s own people there is ample scope for a leftest populist such as Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, this guy is a leftest in the same strain as Hugo Chavez.

If the US was to abruptly shut off the flow of dollars going south this would impact President Fox’s reelection chances and possibly cause him to loose the election.

The idea of a leftest such as Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador with close ties to Chevezz and Castro would not be allowed to pass, but the methods to stop such an outcome are much more costly to the US than the toleration of 10 - 20M illegal mexicans.

In California, among violent jailed criminals in prison, illegals make up a 50% increase over the regular population.

I think the border patrol needs to be far more agressive for their own safety.
