LOS ANGELES - The Red Cross has less than an eight-hour supply of Type O-Negative blood in what is being called one of Southern California's worst blood shortages in recent history, an organization official said on Friday. There are also no severe shortages of O-Positive and other blood types, according to Julie Juliusson of the Southern California Red Cross. "We are urging our neighbors to make an appointment today to donate blood," said Director of Donor Recruitment Cliff Numark. "We are also asking businesses, universities, churches and other groups of 100 people or more to schedule blood drives to support the community blood program." Appointments to donate blood can be made by calling (800) GIVE-LIFE or at socalredcross.org. Donors must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good health and not be at risk for HIV/AIDS.

I believe "O Neg" blood is a universal doner,
"O Neg" is universal, but if you have O Neg blood type you can not recive any other type.
I wouldn't give one thin dime to the Red Cross, much less a drop of our precious "O Neg" blood.
A college friend had a parttime job driving the blood center van. He drove around wearing those wax Halloween vampire fangs....
Maybe LA needs some vampires to collect blood.
I wonder how much of this blood shortage is due to gang violence?
I have A+ blood, that`s because I am numero uno, top of the heap, King of the hill, A number one...THeeeeeeese liitle town bluuues...arrre melting awaaay..
I'm A-negative.

Blood money: what Red Cross donors didnt know (1976) Red Cross Going to Refuse Money Raised by Hillary Protest Banner Auction
I wouldn't give one thin dime to the Red Cross, much less a drop of our precious "O Neg" blood.

I don't get it. Explain why not, and "our precious". I'm not following that.
I donated (I'm O-) about 5 weeks ago. What do you find wrong with that?
O+ =38%
O- =6% (universal)
AB-= 0.5% (most rare)
B- =2%
I have O-Negative blood, but the Red Cross won't even talk to me anymore. First I spent a year in England, which is considered a high risk country, then I was sick and had to have nasty drugs that linger in the body for life, so I can never donate blood again.
See the links above.
No one is asking u to give to the ARC, but please give somewhere. O neg is the choice for newborn transfusion, traumatic blood loss in emergencies. It has no A antibodies and no B antibodies- So every blood type can safely receive it. However, an O Neg newborn can only receive O neg even after a type and crossmatch. Think about that because you are O Neg. If you experienced blood loss due to an accident, you would be counting on that O neg donor.
It requires no type and cross, when you cannot hear a blood pressure to due to voluminous blood loss- O neg is first on the scene. Somewhere a baby will need O neg, or someone's wife, husband or mother.
Whatever you do not like about the ARC is cool with me, I just work to save lives. Just give somewhere- not a plasma center though- those are traditionally wasting precious O Neg on diagnostic plasma.
I have O neg and have donated many times. Once it saved a kids life . The took two pints and it really sappped my energy but wow what a feeling.
But to give a drop to the red cross isn't in the cards.
I refuse to give to this group of anti American anti Israel
thugs.
And don't get me going on the difference of red cresent and red cross.
A local blood bank yes as long as it isn't affiliated with the red cross.
Good for you donating blood.
I give Apheresis myself,I once went to visit a friend at Vanderbilt Hospital and got lost and ended up in the Childrens department. The saddest thing I`ve ever seen, these little boys & girls with cancer. They need plateletes due to the chemo, they`ll hemmorage without the transfussion of platletes.
The International Red Cross,They`re rats though
Me too. I gave as much as I could until they started the 'time in UK' qualifier. Now I can't give anymore.
Do you know if other donor centers have the same restriction?
