In light of this story that appeared in the Washington Whispers column of U.S. News and World Report:

Rice Wants It--But in Draft Form

Political associates of Secretary of State Condi Rice are stirring the 2008 presidential pot on her behalf. While she takes the high road, they're pushing her name out there. "She definitely wants to be president," said one. But, the friend added, Rice isn't planning on quitting to run. "She wants to be drafted," he said.

Interesting site. Dr. Rice is a well-educated woman who has overcome much adversity to get where she is. I'd be more comfortable with Dr. Rice as a candidate if she was pro-life, though. That issue would prohibit me from voting for her.

She has said over and over and over and over....that she is not running and has no interest in running.

I have not seen any evidence that Condi would be any better at protecting our borders than her current boss. I would consider voting for her if she campaigned on a secure border platform but otherwise she won't get my vote. I'll stay home before I vote for another open borders Republican.

Although traditions are going out the window, the tradition has been that the Sec of State maintains a non-political stance in return for bi-partisan support of foreign policy. For Dr. Rice to become political at this point would make her vulnerable to criticism about the way she does her job as SOS. Ultimately, how Rice (and Dubya) do on the international front determines her future.

If democratic elections and expansion of personal freedom continue in the third world; and

if the UN and old Europe continue to embarass themselves and not present a viable alternative to the Bush doctrine;

Then Rice has a future beyond returning to the academic world and expert guest in the media.

If Dubya gets Janice Rogers Brown types on the Supreme Court then abortion will be much more of a judicial issue than presidential issue in 2008. But if those on the court end up being like GOP appointed Brennan and Kennedy then the pro-life movement will probably be so dejected they either dropout of politics or support the Constitution Party, which is the same thing.

So in either the case of abortion not being a presidential issue anymore, or of the pro-life forces dropping out of the GOP, Dr Rice won't be blocked from a presidential run on that issue

BTW I am a pro-life multi-issue person. The political stupidity and counter-productive 2-year-old tantrums of pro-lifers is one of the most frustrating factors in politics.

Pro-life will remain an issue, no matter if GWB appoints nine justices to the Sup Ct.

The open borders and our immigration policies are hot issues right now also.

And a President is more than a functionary in the office. A President is a leader, and a leader must carry in his heart the same deep convictions and the same high aspirations as his followers carry in their hearts. He must, in his spirit, stand on the same bedrock and see the same stars---it doesn't matter if he won't reach those stars, but the people expect him to see what they see.

I would joyfully campaign for Condi Rice if she were pro-life, anti-euthanasia, and said just a few things that need saying about the integrity of our borders and our Constitution. It would not matter to me if she could not put her ideas into effect immediately. Leaders lead you there.

It remains to be heard, what she carries in her heart on many vital issues. It remains to be seen whether she is a leader---or merely a superlative Secretary.

Sorry, but that does not wash for me. Neither are pro-life. If, in this entire nation, we cannot find a single decent pro-life candidate to put up against the Hildabeast, then we have serious issues as a Party. I will not be a part of electing someone who sees the murder of innocents as a "personal choice" no matter if they have an "R" after their name or not.

I am reading Rise of the Vulcans, right now. Highly recommended. Based on that book, Rice has my vote. She would be GREAT.

Life issue aside, she does not get my vote because she has no meaningful experience to lead the greatest nation on earth. Simply parroting Bush's policies does not make one presidential material.

And no, if Hillary gets the nod Rice will not cut into the black or women vote, but she would lose some conservative support (I sadly say some because a true conservative could not vote for her on many levels but some are so desperate to offset Hillary they are willing to throw Reagan's principles out the window for a crap shoot).

It would be best if she returned to the private sector in 2008.

Respectfully disagree. Condi would cause the greatest realignment in this country since Lincoln.

She is perfectly positioned. Which one of the GOP potentials can stop her, she has more experience at the highest levels of government than any of them.

The fact that she has not been a politician, is only to her benefit. Her record will be based on the Bush Administration- for better or worse.

Don't forget, Clarence Thomas, a certifiable conservative, got his appointment because 60% of Black America supported him. In respectful opposition to your view, I think Condi will get more support among Black Americans than any other Republican in history.

She's Hillary's worse nightmare. She's smarter, a better speaker, she has no skeletons in her closet.

If Condi runs, she wins going away,

As for abortion, I'll wait to hear specifically what she says.

I don't know how more definitive Dr. Rice can be.
She doesn't speak in broad generalizations. She speaks in very clear specifics.

1. "Relunctantly pro-choice" takes a "libertarian" view that it should be a state, not federal, matter.
2. No late-term abortion.
3. No federal funding.
4. Yes, parental notification.

Is that not clear?
