Saad and Myers get dumped overboard.

No, they do not. They are still on the calendar. Nothing has been resolved on Meyers and Saad.

Nothing is set in stone

Wrong, the relevant RINO's have swron not to change the rules in the 109th Congress whcih effectively means that any SCOTUS nominations by President BUsh, with King John's approval of course, are subject to fillibuster. And you can dang well count on just that.

That's what I'm saying. This is not a good situation, but hurling oneself over a cliff...as some in here seem to be leaning towards...is a bit extreme. We have a lot of options -- we can vote out the ones we don't like...we have third parties...heck, if there's no one I like to vote for, I can always write in my own name.

But to give up our freedoms...one of our basic fundamental privileges here...because of this setback is just not right. We end up hurting ourselves. And you know, it plays into the hands of the enemy (the socialists) too.

I fart in the GOP's general direction.

LOL! Oddly, that's the first comment I've seen that I feel compelled to respond to...:-)

I'm glad to see there is still enough competition for this to even be at issue but, like most others here, I think this "deal" sucks and represents that the difference between the two parties is decreasing rapidly.

I was flicking channels and ended up on Olbermann. The DUmmies heads are going to explode. He and his guest just said the Dems blinked. That what really happened is the Dems blinked, it's going to look like the Repubs did but in reality it was really the Dems and Olbermann agreed.

What a perfectly horrible deal. The GOP gets nothing except 3 judges in exchange for agreeing to take the nuclear option off the table for the balance of this Senate term. That means it cannot be used for a SCOTUS nominee to replace Reinquist or otherwise for this term. Moreover, the agreement that filibusters should not be used except rarely, does not commit anyone to vote for cloture if it is not used rarely, just that they will not filibuster.

As I said, this is a horrid deal.

They gave it up and received nothing in return.

I'm sorry, but that's incorrect. All this little maneuver did for Harry Reid was delay the Day of Reckoning - Frist still has the ability to exercise the Option when needed.

More importantly, consider this - if the Option had come to the floor, and Frist were unable to garner 51 votes, the precedent created would have allowed the filibuster to continue unfettered. Nothing could have been done to stop a filibuster of any and all Supreme Court nominees. As it is, the Option is alive, and if the President nominates Brown or Owen to the Court, even the Looney Lefties won't be able to stop their confirmation.

Oh yes it could have. Obviously, you have less than no knowledge of how things like this work.

"You need momentum to deliver the nuclear option. The momentum will not come over and over again. This was Frist's chance and he blew it. It effectively passes control of the Senate to the Dems and McCain. Frist blinked and lost. He won't have the momentum again."

Couldn't agree more. Power is also as much about perception as reality. And tonight's events will create an image that McCain calls the shots in the Senate.

"So where was Frist during this big announcement? Is McCain Majority Leader now?"

Could be some Fristian Strategery here.

I guess bringing in the the mattresses flushed out the Rinos.

Rinos are easily picked off (like dingleberries....no pun intended)...after flushing (no pun intended)

And hold the Schardenfreude.

For the life of me I don't know why the Republicans caved in to these Rats. What or who are they afraid of? Howard Dean?

How foolishly naive of me.

With the series of climatic vote set for Tuesday, compromise-minded senators of both parties met in the office of Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record), R-Ariz., for a last stab at compromise

They left out:

for a last stab (in the back) at compromise

This was written by a columnist on May 15th:

WASHINGTON - By the end of the week, the Senate could go nuclear - unless a handful of moderates find a way to reach what has so far been an unreachable compromise.

After months of buildup, Republicans say they finally are ready to trigger the "nuclear option" to ban filibusters that block judicial nominations, paving the way for the White House to reshape the federal courts and, in the process, ignite a political free-for-all in the Senate.

___

I will tell you now before it happens . . .

The U.S. Senate will NOT go nuclear. We will see Iran go nuclear before the Senate ever will.

A bit of history:

Republicans threatened to shut down the government over spending in 1995, but in the end, the Republicans cried uncle and caved-in.

The Republicans caved-in over Ruth Bader Ginsberg's Supreme Court nomination. This Marxist was voted in 97-3, for Christ's sake.

The Republicans caved-in over Marxist Souter's nomination. Not one Republican voted against him.

The Republicans caved-in on border control.

The Republicans cave-in. The Republicans ALWAYS cave-in.

I smell some last minute "compromise" where the nuclear option is not triggered. This "compromise" will be structured similar to Bill Clinton's "compromise" with North Korea over nuclear reactors in 1994. In the end, the Democrats win.

The Democrats always win. The Republicans always cave-in.

The Republicans always cave-in.

Frist isn't giving up. He is saying now is that if the Dems fillibuster any nominee, he will present the nuclear option "to all 100 Senators." He just said so explicitly.

This never was about Brown, Owen or Pryor---it was about the Supreme Court Justices---and now the dems RETAIN the right to do this same thing with them---filibuster

And we retain the right to stop them.

I do, though, think it's wrong and stupid to not just get it over with tomorrow.

From NRO's Bench Memos:

"It's a shame" [Kathryn Jean Lopez 05/23 08:16 PM] not everyone is going to get an up and down vote, Bill Frist is saying now on the Senate floor. What about Meyers and Saad, he says. Who's the majority leader again?

This is the money quote from the deal.

For their part, Republicans agreed not to support an attempt to strip Democrats of their right to block votes.

This is worse then I thought.
