PROGRAM -- (Senate - May 20, 2005)

Mr. CORNYN. Mr. President, on Monday, the Senate will resume consideration of the nomination of Priscilla Owen to serve as a circuit judge on the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals. Monday will be the fourth consecutive day the Senate considers the Owen nomination.
Over the past 3 days, a number of Members, on both sides of the aisle, have come to the floor to speak on the nomination. We have conducted over 25 hours of debate, and we will continue on Monday. Moments ago, we filed a cloture motion on the nomination, and that will ripen on Tuesday of next week.
On behalf of the majority leader, I remind my colleagues the leader has announced our next rollcall vote will occur Monday afternoon at 5:30. That vote will be on a motion to instruct the Sergeant at Arms to request Senators' attendance. Senator Frist will have more to say about next week's session on Monday.
Democrats look to be out of power through no fault but their own for at least a decade. The reason McCain and the others are upset is that they can anticipate the same may well happen to them. Their days of power are declining. We are looking to fill their seats with conservatives. The more seats filled with conservatives, the less their swing vote actually matters.
they were given the opportunity to prove they could lead this country before, the result was decades of Democrat rule. McCain was their Great hope in 2000, he was defeated by Bush. Now they seek to take the majority they resent they couldn't usher in with their policies, and usurp it from our hands in a coup. It's no different than the Judiciary or the Democrats. neither could win the will of the majority of americans, so they seek to ignore the Majority and seize power from within.
In the long term the RINO's will be as defeated as the Democrats have been. The only question is whether the current "mavericks" wish to survive the transition to a more conservative body, or if they wish to give us a reason to replace them immediately at next election.
Sounds like he's got a bit of a cold too......
I thought he said, "Oos-ha er-ya addy-day?"
Mebbe that was Demosthenes to Alexander . . .
The Senators from Mained should be punished if they betray the Republicans on this vote.
You are making WAY to much sense! Awesome mini speech!
AggH Feinstein!
That's a VERY interesting point. It's my understanding that Congress votes on the BRAC as a whole, though, so there's no way any of the Maine bases can be taken off the list. I'll bet the SCHEDULING of the closings is up for grabs, though.

It just got more important for this to work, IMHO
I saw where the SCOTUS ruled that it is unconstitutional for a murder suspect to be shackled in the courtroom.
Now, considering what happened in Atlanta a month or so ago, this decision makes a lot of sense, doesn't it???
Feinstein up to make a plea. Time to let pressures cool (no saucer). Walk away from a decision that will turn out governmental system on its head (that's a bit hyperbolic).
Oh no, now Grassley is really sounding like Jimmy Stewart! Poor guy, but it's better than a blow-up still from the movie again.
News break just said "cots are being wheeled into the senate as the filibuster on judges comes to a head....." Are they really, or is he just using a figure of speech??
Di apparently believes that the Senate Body cannot legally change its own rules.
The only area Frist is not conservative is health care. On that issue he is a moderate, preferring more government control. Other than that, he is just like most Republican senators. A little challenged in the spine department.
You may need a little of this, before the day's over -- comes with a shoulder sling for those terminal moments of frustration, when we'll all surely be reduced to pacing and shrieking at those predictably imbecilic posers ....
And the really sad thing about that case is that it involved a SENTENCING hearing. The guy had already been convicted by a jury.
DiFi whining about the senate never working by majority vote? How did they come up with this? Even the demonRATs who aren't usually funny, are being funny!
Feinstein is sickening. Now matter how many times the dems recite the mantra, it isn't a RULES CHANGE.
agree wholeheartedly
