In these very long threads, many items get lost. I'm going to reprint (again) three of them - first from me

sorry: that "whip count" "compromise" is NOT acceptable.

It gives all the Demodogs the ability to say "Gee, whiz: it was not ME who voted against the minority woman" --- it was those rascally Republicans." ---> No accountability.

No compromise. Up or down majority vote is the only Constitutional option.

Second: the exact and proper tone from Soul Seeker:

Damn straight. A Republican can disagree with the President but under NO cicumstances will I tolerate betrayal.

ANY Republican that thinks he will win high office by stabbing the knife in the President's back is going to be educated when they lose in stunning defeat. Hear that Mccain? hear that Hagel and Chafee?

This president has won my Respect. I don't agree with everything but I will NEVER tolerate abuse toward him to curry favor with the MSM.

Third, from Howlin:

I had almost this same discussion with a Graham staffer in January; I told him flat out that they need to understand that MOST of us are what you would call "Bush Republicans" and that stabbing Bush in the back was NOT going to win them any popularity votes because we all felt like we had been robbed in 2000 of a "real" 4 year term for Bush and, now that he won so big in 2004, we DEMANDED that they support him for four years so he can get his agenda through.

Honest to goodness, they just do NOT get it; I told this same person that there was ABSOLUTELY NOTHING that could EVER make me vote for McCain under any circumstance and I swear to you, they were FLOORED that I wouldn't support him if he was the nominee.

My position is that WE worked for this four years and I damn well expect THEM to support HIM.

What's At Stake!
URGENT: Take action immediately!

The "nuclear option" -- busting the filibuster
In their zeal to pack the courts with anti-choice extremists, President Bush and Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist want to break Senate rules and eliminate the Senate’s 200-year tradition of rules that foster consensus and allow the minority party a meaningful voice. This "nuclear option" would take away our most powerful line of defense against extremist judges: the filibuster.

What does the “nuclear option” have to do with the Supreme Court and the right to choose?

* President Bush has not nominated even one circuit court judge who supports a woman’s right to choose. In fact, many of his nominees have called for Roe v. Wade to be overturned. We have every reason to believe that Bush will put an anti-choice judge on the Supreme Court as soon as he gets the chance.
* President Bush may get to nominate up to four justices during his second term.
* Supreme Court justices serve for life. Once they are confirmed, they will hold extraordinary power over the lives of ordinary Americans for generations, and there is almost no way to remove them from the bench.
* The Supreme Court protects our most cherished constitutional rights, including a woman’s right to choose safe and legal abortion. If Bush stacks the Supreme Court with anti-choice justices, there’s little we can do to prevent Roe from being overturned.

During President Bush’s first term, senators used the filibuster carefully and selectively. While the Senate confirmed more than 200 of President Bush’s judicial nominees to lifetime appointments, senators used the filibuster to block only 10 of the very most controversial nominees.

George W. Bush's Judicial Nominees

A revolution is underway in the federal courts.

Rights and laws that generations of Americans had come to take for granted have been wiped off the books, and more are at risk. Already courts have struck down anti-discrimination laws, part of the Violence Against Women Act, affirmative action programs, and other guarantees of equal opportunity. And the courts are allowing more and more restrictions on a woman’s right to choose.

NARAL Pro-Choice America has conducted comprehensive research on Bush’s anti-choice judicial nominees, and the potential damage that such manipulation of the courts could have on the future of choice.

Biographies of Current U.S Supreme Court Justices

The retirement of a single United States Supreme Court justice could have a dramatic impact on the constitutional protection of a woman’s right to choose. The two most significant cases dealing with reproductive rights in the last decade have been decided by the narrowest of margins, a vote of 5-4.

While choice once enjoyed a comfortable majority on the Court, it now hangs precariously in the balance.

Coburn is a conservative... if he was a pro-fetal death liberal he could have 1000 offices open and not a word would be said about it.

I like what he's saying now, I un-muted the tv to listen. He just really turned me off when he opened with the "partisan for the truth" stuff. I dunno why.

If the Republicans give them this deal [up or down votes - no nuke] I will be "deeply saddened".

It is entirely up to the DEMs. If they consent to the vote on the nominees, then there is no impetus to carry out the nuke.

If the Republicans give them this deal (up/down vote on all nominees, no nuke) I will be "deeply saddened".

Republicans won't have to "give them" that deal. This is the outcome I've predicted all along. The Dems, recognizing they're losing, will simply refrain from filibustering these nominees. With no filibuster, the pubbies can't invoke the nuke option...and Dems will have preserved it for the SCOTUS nomination.

If they do that and try to filibuster a SCOTUS justice...God help 'em.

This is THE "NEW" DEMOCRAT PARTY...

Generation Pro-Choice

Keeping the government
out of your bedroom

It’s not just your mother’s pro-choice movement…
If you support access to birth control, sex education and abortion, and you've never lived in a time when abortion was illegal -- then congratulations, you are Generation Pro-Choice. And we need your help getting other young people involved in the fight to protect the right to privacy and a woman's right to choose -- or else quite frankly, we're gonna lose it.

When it comes to the politics of choice, it's hard to know what to believe, even harder to know what the real consequences will be, and almost impossible to feel like you can do anything about it. But Generation Pro-Choice is changing all that. We're not trying to save a woman’s right to privacy and right to choose from right-wing extremists any more. We're doing it.

So "Generation Pro-Choice" starts here -- but there will be no movement, no dialogue, and no change without you. There’s so much that you can do!

* Sign up to get the Generation Pro-Choice newsletter.
* NARAL Pro-Choice America goes punk. Get the details about our partnership with Punkvoter.com.
* Spread the word. We’ll give you fun & cool ways to get your friends in on the act... for example you can send a sassy e-mail card here.
* For the price of a couple lattes, you can join Generation Pro-Choice - and make it possible to reach, educate, and activate more people just like you.
* Ask Genny. If you've got questions about pro-choice issues, she's got answers!
* Talk to us. Do you have an idea for getting people moving on this issue? Want to chime in or have a question? Let us know.
* Get ideas and tools to help you organize on campus.
* Get answers. Read about women who couldn’t access reproductive health services, and find out the facts that help you debunk all the myths out there.

That's okay. :-)

O.T. but I hope the majority here today will be able to be here tomorrow? I won't be back until afternoon but any hint of an unacceptable compromise has to be shot down from the start.

RINO's are floating trial balloons and it isn't going to pass for any of us. All present and future nominees get a vote AND no tricky business in selling votes to avoid a rules change. Otherwise their days in the Senate are numbers.

We're watching them.
