Rice in Iraq for Kurdish meeting

http://www.cnn.com/2005/WORLD/meast/05/15/iraq.main/

BAGHDAD, Iraq (CNN) -- U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice arrived in the Kurdish region of northern Iraq Sunday for a meeting with Kurdistan Democratic Party leader Masoud Barzani.

Rice landed at the airport in Erbil at 10:45 a.m. (2:45 a.m. EDT) where she was greeted by Barzani who escorted her to his home for their meeting.

The trip is Rice's first visit to Iraq.

A State Department official traveling with Secretary Rice said she was engaged in talks with Iraqi political leaders to deliver a strong message that the United States wants the timeline for drafting an Iraqi constitution to be met.

Rice would also stress the importance of the new Iraqi government making every effort to be inclusive of all segments of the population, the official said.
