MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Mexican President Vicente Fox called recent U.S. measures to stem illegal immigration a step back for bilateral relations on Friday and said Mexican migrants do jobs "that not even blacks want to do."
In comments likely to raise the temperature of the immigration debate, Fox defended the role of undocumented Mexican workers in the United States to a group of Texas business people meeting in Mexico.
"There is no doubt that Mexicans, filled with dignity, willingness and ability to work are doing jobs that not even blacks want to do there in the United States," he said in a speech broadcast in part on local radio and reported on newspaper web sites.
Fox said recent, tougher measures against immigrants do not represent "the road we should be building between friends and partners."
Mexico has been seeking an accord with Washington for years to make it easier for millions of illegal Mexican immigrants to live and work in the United States. The country expects to repatriate this year more than 250,000 foreigners, mostly Central Americans headed for the U.S. border.
Mexican hopes were raised early last year when President Bush proposed a temporary worker program but it has become bogged down in Congress.
A key partner in U.S. border security, Mexico is upset at new U.S. controls on foreign-born people, including tougher rules to obtain drivers' licenses.
Congressional Republicans attached the immigration changes to legislation providing $82 billion in emergency funds for fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan. Bush is expected to sign the legislation into law soon.
The law, approved unanimously by the Senate on Tuesday, waives environmental rules to allow the extension of a fence on the border between California and Mexico to stop illegal immigrants. Mexico calls the measure "overly extreme."
But Fox said he was encouraged by a bill put forward on Thursday by Sens. John McCain, an Arizona Republican, and Edward Kennedy, a Massachusetts Democrat, to allow some of the estimated 10 to 12 million illegal immigrants in the United States to get legal jobs and eventual citizenship.
"I hope President Bush will support and push the initiative, as he has publicly agreed. I have to take his word and hope he delivers," Fox said.
"Rev. Jesse Jackson says he plans to phone Fox, calling the remarks a spurious comparison with ominus racial overtones"
Seriously?! I KNEW it wouldn't take Jackson long. Man, the longer Bush waits to make a comment, the more anti-black he will appear to be. Bush is down on the mat and Fox keeps pounding him, but Bush does nothing.
Thanks for doing this. I'm a nurse at the public hospital in my county and you would not believe the amount of free care that we give to "undocumented workers". (We can't call them illegal aliens.) The county tried to disqualify them from receiveing preventive, routine care in dr's offices. But when that happened the emergency room was overwhelmed because they would just go there for medication or other non-emergency needs.
What does the distinguished President Fox have to say about Chinese, Japanese and Jewish workers? What about Italian immigrants?
It is a joke that they hyper-report Gov. Arnold's "close the border" mistatment, which he immediately corrected to "secure the border". And the governor's liberal opponent, President Fox, says there are jobs "not even blacks will do". Where is the outrage!?
The RNC just called, loking for $ as usual. I told the woman no more donations unless the border is closed. She had heard it before.
I received this in an email...posted it the other day, but it's worth repeating:
Interesting thought from a Southern Californian.
Try driving around as a Gringo in Mexico with no liability insurance.....and have an accident....
Enter MEXICO illegally. Never mind immigration quotas, visas, international law, or any of that nonsense.
Once there, demand that the local government provide free medical care for you and your entire family.
Demand bilingual nurses and doctors.
Demand free bilingual local government forms, bulletins, etc.
Procreate abundantly.
Deflect any criticism of this allegedly irresponsible reproductive behavior with, "It is a cultural United States thing. You would not understand, pal."
Keep your American identity strong. Fly Old Glory from your rooftop, or proudly display it in your front window or on your car bumper.
Speak only English at home and in public and insist that your children do likewise.
Demand classes on American culture in the Mexican school system.
Demand a local Mexican driver license. This will afford other legal rights and will go far to legitimize your unauthorized, illegal, presence in Mexico.
Insist that local Mexican law enforcement teach English to all its officers.
Good luck!
Because it will never happen.
It will not happen in Mexico or any other country in the world...
except right here in the United States... Land of the naive!
No good deed goes unpunished, my FRiend...
Allegedly, the first to be outraged is Jesse Jackson. This is the second time he has allied with our cause. The first time was when he spoke for Terri Schindler.
Pinging to the article and to post 59.
He got it backwards, as usual. Hey, Vicente! Illegal entry into our country is an offense against the laws of nations -- something which you have in your laws as well. What twist of logic and law do you use to justify your complaint? I can't believe your folks elected you as president. We'd impeach ours if he violated our consitution.
So Vicente, what else do you do for your population to enhance their lives besides encourage them to leave your country? You have the natural resources that would allow a pretty fair standard of living for your citizens. When are you going to quit acting like a destitute bum on the streets begging for a handout from other nations?
What's the problem, Vicente? No toilets in your country to keep your worker bees busy?
Or is the truth of the matter simply that our border policies are cutting into your drug trade?
<...snip...>
". . . and said Mexican migrants do jobs "that not even blacks want to do.""
A hell of an admission, Vicente. Is Mexico to be known as the Toilet Cleaning Capitol of the World? I'd do something to change that image, Vicente. Heh.
That is very good!
FRegards,
BF
His remark shows what he thinks of his own people, eh? I guess they taint his own aristocratic image.
One of the jobs that blacks don't want to do is deal with Mexican immigration.
Just stop going to Mexico on holiday! The owners in Cabo, Yucatan and others would be screaming at the government within weeks and they are all owned by the same families.
Well, speak for yourself wrt Terri Schindler. That whole 'one tube in one person' story was the most irrelevent overreported issue ever. That can't even compare to the relevance of ~3 Million people being illegally dumped into our hospitals and schools every year, then Fox saying the words he said today.
This issue is heating up. Fox just dumped some fuel on the fire. We are a "nation of laws" as our politicians so pompously like to intone, or we are not.
Those Mosque's are a real problem and are going to have to be dealt with sooner or later. I consider every single one of them a safe house for Islamist terrorists and composed of people whose first allegiance is to Islam with no interest whatever in assimilation, insisting on retaining their own language, manner of dress, customs and traditions. Some of them may have slithered their way into citizenship, but they are not Americans. I trust none of them.
Well, I am sure most of the Muslim's in America or good people. But what better place for the terrorist to run to and hide out? A Mosque.
Most big families have their black sheep, and I am sure these Mosque's are harboring their own share of black sheep, waiting to get "the call" to do us harm.
It's funny how they moved into the US silently and now we are just finding out just how many we have across the United States.
