CNN's Kelly Arena reports that one man is being held by Maryland State Police at an airport in Frederick, MD. The police are waiting for federal authorities to arrive on the scene.

The man is said to be the pilot of the small aircraft that triggered an evacuation of government buildings in downtown Washington when he reportedly violated restricted airspace.

Frederick, MD. is located about an hour northwest of Washington, D.C. along the I-270 corridor.

Thanks for the bump Aeronaut, I had to fly around a Bush function in Shreveport a couple months back. Good thing I checked the TFRs! I had not heard anything about his visit on the news. Radar following is a good idea this day and time and for sure around the DC area.

I'm staying just up the street from there. It's a tiny private airport. Just got a paved runway within the last 15 years or so.

True story - I have a friend who was a CFI for an Air Force flying club in Korea. He had a student pilot almost land at a North Korea AFB until tracer rounds convinced him to abort.
He found his way back to his home base and had some neat little holes in the rudder assembly to prove his raid on the North Koreans.

The useful load of a 150 is 615#, and empty wt is 985 #. Fuel capacity is 26 gal. Two seats, and a little room in the back for a quart of oil and a towbar.

Well, if an IslamoBadGuy didn't mind flying over gross, 500# might work. If he's an FAA-standard-sized IslamoBadGuy, there's about 450# of useful load left.

All my flying is done IFR. During the campaign I always called Flight Service -- I wanted to be on a recording asking specifically about TFRs on or near my route.

"run" is a bit of an exageration. It was more of an ungainly trot ;)

During the Korean War, 2 F-84s were assigned to hit DPRKAF base. Hit base in Russia by mistake.

Were court martialed for is, but were let off, because USSR would send no one to testify.

Defense lawyer's position was, you may try to prove that my clients were only ones who were in area, etc., but how can you prove attack actually took place, was not Soviet disinformatziatta, etc.

Acquitted.

They need to shoot the next one down and then and then GA pilots may be a little more careful around DC.

How many of you guys are normally complaining about police over use of force on other days?

Shooting at a plane that you fear ~might~ hit something only turns it into a plane that definately ~will~ hit something. It doesn't just vaporize. I think we need to be a little prudent about making sure it's really a threat.

They simply would't bother with a 152. No reason too. There are faster, heavier, and cheaper airplanes available.
