More and more gay men in Connecticut are contracting syphilis, a life-threatening sexually transmitted disease, according to new statistics from the state Department of Public Health.
Forty-five new cases of primary and secondary syphilis in Connecticut residents were reported to the state in 2004 -- more than triple the number of cases reported just four years ago, and 50 percent more than last year. Of those 45 new cases, 34 were gay men, including 12 who live in lower Fairfield County.
The disease -- an epidemic a decade ago among poor blacks in Connecticut's larger cities -- is spreading quickly among gay suburban men because they're having unprotected sex, said Heidi Jenkins, director of the state health department's STD control program.
Health officials who interviewed most of the people who tested positive for syphilis last year found that some gay men live dangerously, Jenkins said. Despite efforts to promote the use of condoms, some gay men have unprotected sex with multiple partners they meet at Manhattan parties and bars, a popular bathhouse in Providence, R.I., and through Internet chat rooms, she said. Also, increasing numbers of gay men are smoking or injecting crystal methamphetamine, a highly addictive drug that spurs "high-risk" behavior such as unprotected sex, Jenkins said. Others say unprotected sex is increasing because some gay men no longer believe AIDS can kill them prematurely.
"It's a great concern to us," Jenkins said. "What we're seeing with these cases are men with a lot of partners."

The deathstyle marches on.
Syphillis and the clap????? ANTIBIOTICS!
STD. The gift that keeps on giving.
They should start protesting against the Bush administration for not funding the cure for syphalis more aggressively.

Those toilet seats will get you every time
It should be, lady. It's keeping you in a job.
Who Knew?!
"....some gay men live dangerously...."
Seems to me the whole attraction about homosexuality is that it's living dangerously. The more I see these stories, the more I am for quarantining all of them because they DO pose a health menace.
Well, Civil Unions were just approved in CT......
And the fudgepackers still try to insist that we accept their debauched lifestyles as 'normal' and 'mainstream'. Sheesh!
This from a state that makes everything in sight into an epidemic. They play with the statistics to justify new departments. The world's gonna end and we gotta spend more of your tax money to save you.
New phrase of the week:
I'm from the government and I'm here to help.
" This from a state that makes everything in sight into an epidemic. "
I'm ashamed to admit I am a native of the once great state of CT , now commonly known as the Peoples Republic of CT ...
26: For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. Their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural,
27: and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in their own persons the due penalty for their error.
Does this mean we should dump the other half of the federal health research funding into Siphilis now?
The sad thing is that we have a Republican Governor rolling over on everything the Dems/Liberals want.
Its a disease that has inficted the whole Northeast--even NH (though not as bad).

I don't think Ms. Elders was "healthy and normal."
I still laugh at that silly-looking suit she always wore (every chooooowwww should be a planned and wanted choooowwww.....we can make safer guns.....we can make safer bullets....).
Wonder if getting syph is a cool among gays as getting AIDS?
