The premise everyone seems to be operating from is that global climate is inherently stable and that any change must be both bad and caused by evil conservatives.

The fact is that climate has varied from extreme to extreme long before man arrived and certainly long before we figured out how to harness energy.

It is folly to think that we control the climate. Never have, never will.

On Boxing Day 250 years ago Londoners awoke astonished to find the Thames frozen over. Huge ice floes had jammed under the 25 narrow arches of old London Bridge on the ebb tide, and a severe frost had then locked the ice firmly together for miles. A remarkable fair was established on the ice and was to last for nine weeks.
City-dwellers were suddenly released from their cramped streets by the frozen river, which created an open vista in the capital. Regardless of the thickness of the ice, varying from 18ft to only 12in, a cheery devil-may-care attitude spread, and tens of thousands flocked on to the frozen river. Country squires travelled from afar to see the astonishing spectacle. Along parts of the river, mountains of ice resembled the face of a stone quarry.
A street of brightly coloured booths and tents, which grew in number each week, was soon constructed. Fairground attractions included swings, merry-go-rounds and puppet-shows. Ladies played skittles, and gentlemen the fashionable game of bowls. While cheering supporters warmed their hands with baked potatoes, teams of apprentices risked breaking legs at hockey and football. There were donkey, horse and wagon races. Coaches crunched over the ice between Blackfriars and Westminster.

Hmm. Might the gulf stream scenario's equivalent in the Pacific, the Japanese current, do the same? We here in Alaska will be first to find out. We are direct recipients of the Japanese current as the Brits are of the gulf stream.

Great Britain could increase by between 2 to 4.5 degrees Celsius (3.6 to 8 degrees Fahrenheit) by the year 2080, at a rate of 0.3 - 0.5 degrees Celsius (0.5 to 0.9 Fahrenheit) each decade.

There's the problem, right there. They never had this problem when they were still using the term Centigrade.

The key words in this story are, "apparently, possibly, could be, some think"

Wasn't there a study reported late last year where a scientist found the thick ice of the Arctic had just moved elsewhere...

[ The weakening, apparently caused by global warming, could herald big changes in the current over the next few years or decades. Paradoxically, it could lead to Britain and northwestern and Europe undergoing a sharp drop in temperatures. ]

Global COOLING ?...
Damn it, are we globally warming or are we globally cooling..

The author forgot to mention that the Thames used to freeze over every winter.
If his theory holds true it sound like the climate in England will only be restored to it's former state.

Well in that case I am going to do two things.

1. Start growing food to sell to Europe.

2. Buy stock in future Scottish ski resorts.

Tsk,tsk, not to worry. Global warming shall save Britain, just as it shall eventually save our frost nipped and shivering gardens, here in North Carolina.

Thank God for Global warming! True patriots will support global warming anyway they can. Run both your furnace and central AC all year long, run SUVs in four wheel drive in all seasons, never walk to where you can drive, adjust your speed to the lights in your town, so you catch all on red and must wait the maxium possible time, keep every light in your house burning 24/7, do all cooking at the hottest period of the day, etc., etc.,. Use your own imagination's!

CLIMATE change researchers have detected the first signs of a slowdown in the Gulf Stream — the mighty ocean current that keeps Britain and Europe from freezing.

The Gulf Stream is supposed to be responsible for about 10% of the effect. The rest is caused by the Rocky Mountains.

Lets see if I understand this.

1st, measurements have shown that (one of) the driving force(s) of the Gulf Stream (melting ice from the Arctic) has fallen from 12 "strong" columns, to 2 "weak" columns.

2nd, without the Gulf Stream transporting all of that nice warm water to the Arctic (and then N. Europe), England and N.Europe will begin to resemble Siberia.

3rd, the Arctic Ice cap will melt in the summer

BUT, if one and two are true, how is 3 possible? What will cause the Ice Cap to melt? AND, if it DID melt, why wouldn't the water then sink in columns, thus replenishing the the Gulf Stream, thus eliminating 1 and, in turn 2 as well?

Maybe I just forgot to drink that dose of nuance this morning!!
