COLUMBUS, Ga. May 7, 2005 Faced with stinging public criticism, school officials in this Army base city have reduced a suspension imposed on a student who wouldn't give up his cell phone while talking to his mom a sergeant on duty in Iraq. ...

"Insensitive jackass" is another.
Sounds like they need to fire everybody at the school from the janitor to the principle and everybody in between.
The local paper printed another update to this story which I posted here:

Hate to say it, the kid probably should have beat the shit out of him.
Was the kid suspended for using his phone and not surrendering it? Or is it possible that the kid was being a bad ass army brat (there are some)? And when the teacher saw him breaking a known school rule, and told him to give up the phone, did the kid cop an attitude from the get go? Before the details were known.
Also, if you don't allow some leaway on this issue for the school, every kid will say they're talking to their parent in Iraq, or at least the teachers will feel like their authority is being subverted.
If the kid spouted off to a teacher, without any attempt at a civil communication about the situation, he was in the wrong. And if he were my kid, would have a lot more to worry about (and scream about) than 10 days suspension.
I don't know the whole story. But seeing that the article comes from ABC news, I trust them to paint a pretty unbiased picture of the whole situation. (yes I was just being sarcastic about ABC)
I'm not trying to remove blame from the school. I realize what these indoctrination camps are like. But at the same time, I know what a lot of todays kids are like, military or not. I also know what some military kids are like.
I wonder what would happen if ALL the children of soldiers ar Ft. Benning decided to boycott a few days of classes in retaliation to that school administrator's completely heartless assininity?
That might get the message across to the school to immediately re-instate the boy. Have the administrator apologize before the enitre school populus. Then fire that moron!
Jack.
I agree. But the school would have had HIM arrested.
Notice how the focus has been taken off the teacher for the behavior and put on the childs improper way of handling this situation.
The teacher was the ADULT here. This kids may be 16 or 17; but still is in the LEARNING phase of conduct.
The student was actually suspended for improper conduct after the teacher grabbed his phone and and disconnected his call.
The school made the statement that they could have had him arrested for not handling being grabbed properly.
>>>> If the kid spouted off to a teacher, without any attempt at a civil communication about the situation
The links from yesterday are posted. The school and the child's story are in agreement with what happened.
The child attempted civil communication with the teacher first. The teacher is the one that caused the misconduct.
Are these high hchool officials, members of the N.E.A.? ...and that my tag-line. :D
Thanks. I did not know.
Now then. Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead.
"They're administrators! "
Amen my brother, that explains it all for you!
When everyone is out to get you, paranoid is just good thinking........
Not sure where the line originated (Woody Allen maybe?), but I have long thought it to be a great line.
Good one!
N/P! :D.."spot" usage is fine.
What makes it all the more strange is that the person who grabbed the phone was a women. They have a photo of her on another thread. If that photo was taken during school hours I suggest that the school adopt a dress code for the teachers.
