Most of Mrs. Bush's humor at the correspondents' dinner was just right: Edgy but not over the edge. But I think the stripper and horse jokes were totally beneath her.

Just put it to the other-shoe test: If it were Teresa Heinz Kerry standing up on the dais telling the same jokes, the conservative commentariat would be buzzing for the rest of the year about what a tasteless skank she is.

I don't know how people can expect a Friar type roast or any roast to be G rated. I personally would expect it to be PG with admittance to teenagers, those who aspire to become future politicians, journalists or writers to be allowed in but no one under the age of high school age.

The President has had some setbacks recently. And the Schiavo incident further hurt him in the eyes of the pro life right when he didn't personally swoop in and rescue here or force Jeb to do it. His support for Delay was late and for a while luke warm. All this has caused the RR to feel pushed aside.

So that's what it's really all about is it? All the Terri fanatics who screamed and cried and raged for udderly ridiculous and unenforceable actions by the US government (such as the preposterous subpeona) now want to throw your weight around by attacking the first lady for her jokes at a ~roast~.

I thought it sounded a little like spoiled child behavior. I think it's taught many of us that we need to be very very careful to never give you too much power ;~D

Oh - and the issue at hand? The dinner was nearly five nights ago now.

Sadly, to some people it's all they have to cling to in an argument. It's one of the most childish things you'll see at FR. It's equivalent to "I have more toys than you do". When I changed my screen name recently because I hated the old one, I was so amused by the constant use of the "I'm bigger than you are" taunt anytime someone disagreed with me. It weeds out the intelligent adults from the tantrum having losers.

I listened to the midwest director of the Center for Bioethical Reform yesterday. He was terribly upset. His callers were running about 70-30 against the tastefulness of the jokes. My guess is Malkin is among the first to come out, although she's not RR, she is pretty close. Dobson and others will follow.

Michelle Malkin? She must be a city girl. The Holier than Thou group will feel so vindicated and the hijacking of FR by the Taliban right will be complete.

I thought, no, I KNOW that the "Bush is so stupid he'd accidently wack off a horse" ""joke"" was way over the top (yea, I've heard the joke before). Especially from his wife who is the first lady. I don't know any ladies that would say such a thing in public. Not my wife, my mother, my sisters or any other female I know. Even in private I don't know any woman that would tell such a joke.

Frankly, I now think that any view I had about Laura Bush being a "classy" lady was wrong. Maybe it was just a one time trailer park moment. But I don't think so. I also don't think the same of her husband anymore. A man I have supported for years.

With that said I'd still take the first person and the president over the options we had in the last two elections for president.

By the way, comparing people on this forum to people that would do what is shown in the image above makes what Laura Bush did meaningless. There is a world of difference between the Taliban and people that would pefer that their leaders not have the same humor level as the guy with his tee shirt off and his toothless wife on the average episode of COPS.

why does the response have to include this kind of humor? the media already portrays GW as "dumb" - these jokes feed into that stereotype.

The thing that they don't understand is that MOST OF US here at FR didn't agree with them. They seem to think everybody agreed that Bush and Jeb should circumvent the law; they were wrong.

I've never associated Malkin with the Christian Right. The only claim to fame she's had, so far as I'm aware, is on immigration and being ripped apart by Matthews.

What I see are a few people with an agenda trying to manufacture a scandal to take down Laura Bush's poll numbers and give Christians and the Republican Party a bad name. Until someone can provide solid proof otherwise, I think the assessment is fairly accurate.

The only question is whether these agitators will be successful in their agenda.
